I never met Andrea, but have met her fiance a few times. He is a kind and warm individual. For the times I've seen him, he has remained strong -- on the outside. But it pains me thinking how he's feeling inside.

If someone were to look at a photo of Andrea, you would see she was an angel. It's such a tragedy people like her are taken from her loved ones so early in life. I will never forget Andrea and the thousands of others like her. God bless them forever . - submitted: 5/22/2002 7:50:32 AM

Andrea,
What can I say… I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, you did not deserve any of what happened to you. It was your first business trip and you just didn't deserve to go through that hell. But, now you must be doing well, surrounded by all the others lost, and family that has gone before you - at least we can be thankful for that. Watch over us all ok? Love you and miss you lots!

Dear Andrea, I am at WCTC I just enrolled in computer classes here this fall. I met a young lady who looked just like you. So I had to write. I want to contact your family but I have no words to comfort them. So I write on them is this form. I pray for them daily. Please help us all to get through our lives here until we are together again. With a tearful good-bye. Coach Mary - submitted: 8/25/2004 11:01:46 AM

Dearest Andrea,
So many people, near and far, can't and won't forget you, ever. Total strangers recognize, from your picture, all that is special about you. And yet, they don't know it all -- how can they? We miss you so. The heartbreak goes on and on and on. To turn back time and have you here, to let you live your life as it should have been. Our futile wish. What now? love, auntie shell - submitted: 2/5/2005 6:48:28 PM

Andrea,
I feel so sill crying over the sept. 11 tragedies still four years later. but I still relive that day, everyday, and even though i did not know you or anyone killed that horrific day I feel like you are all my family. A family called mankind. these terrorists that took your life thought that by killing people they would accomplish so much, but what did they accomplish? nothing. well, i will step off of my soap box, so I send my condolences to your family and hope that I might meet you someday on the other side! - submitted: 6/11/2005 3:58:56 AM

Dear Steven,
More than any person I've ever known in my life, you were like a brother to me. Though we both reached 6'10" in our lives, our rare, mutual height is the faintest of my memories of you. It is your ear that I remember most, and how you always lent it to me during the toughest times of my youth. Though I eventually moved far away, you were rarely far from my thoughts. I will never forget you or your beautiful parents who made me feel part of the Hagis family from the first time I met them. I could write volumes about your strength and character, but will always remember that you defined friendship. You will be missed forever. - submitted: 9/12/2002 12:03:01 AM

Thank you for everything, I will always remember you David Halderman, for giving your life so that others may live. The great historical figure and prophet Jesus of Nazareth gave his life because he loved people so much. You have perished because you loved and that is the noblest act of all. Thank you for living so bravely and lovingly despite the destruction. Your memory will motivate us to love more and hate less. Thank you for that gift. - submitted: 1/15/2002 4:17:09 PM

Response to September 11
by Lydia Robertson (daughter)
About Valerie, my mom
She taught we children moral & polite behavior & table manners. She encouraged us to learn respect for each other & to talk about our anger rather than to fight & hit. It was a hard lesson. Hitting is so much easier than cooling off & sometimes the other little brat-full sibling seemed so deserving, so deceitful.
She spoke about the greatness of our country and she also spoke about policies, many policies she didn’t like. She wanted civil rights and equal right for ALL Americans and the vote for all Americans. Although she was a democrat, she would always drive anyone who needed to the polls. I remember sitting in the "way back" of the VW microbus and hearing an old bird say, "Why are you doing this? I know you are a democrat and I am a conservative republican." He called her a fool, but she said, "I don’t care how you vote, only that you do vote"
She saw a need she could fill and simply did it. She read that teenaged boys were impossible to place in foster homes. She took in teenaged boys. There is no sure count as to how many children actually came to live in her home; I lost count around 17. And she made each of us feel important.
Terrorism and the Community Response
My city, my community, my friends and my family pulled together BEFORE this tragedy and now even more so. We have always been a great city. Many outside may not have known it or understood that before. But the rest of the country & the world are finding it out. We are diverse & colorful. We are a city of the world.
The world was wounded when the trade center was hit. It is but a flesh wound in the grand scheme of things. I lost my mother, but if her murder can bring the world together the way it has brought this city and countless other places across this country and the world together, we will be better for it. I can be at peace knowing my mother died this way.
As I looked down at my 7 year old’s toothless smile it occurred to me that our front teeth have been knocked out and with them our innocence & naivete.
We are growing up. We have had a terrible loss but we can learn why so many are angry with us. We cannot ignore the world any more. If a small group of angry, sick fascists, can blow up a building in Oklahoma city and drive 767s into the world trade center we must begin to face and educate our selves as to why. These fascists take misguided American foreign policy & twist it into their own tool against us. It is important what we do next. We must not strike out in anger & for revenge. We must wait, cool down, think.
These men did not commit suicide against some American foreign policy. They WANT war with America. They WANT America to bomb Afghanistan into a dustier hell then it already is. They anticipate that, because, to them Afghani lives are unimportant; the Taliban makes that clear in its policies toward women among others.
No, what Osama Bin Laden & those like him want is to create a new generation of young men willing to die for their cause. And what makes young men more riled up than if their innocent families are bombed. If we play into their hands, if we bomb Afghanistan and there are heavy civilian casualties, then we are giving them the army of young terrorists they need. These men are no more Muslims than McViegh was Christian. Do not look at their faith for answers as to why this was done. It has nothing to do with it. Islam and Muslims are not the enemy. Christians and Christianity is not the enemy. Jews and Judaism is not the enemy. The enemy is the fascist who uses these faiths to disguise their true intentions. Chaos, power, absolute rule.
Do not use this tragedy as an excuse to hurt your neighbor, who may look Arab or dress as you may think and Arab might.
My mother would have us find another way to vent. Give blood to the Red Cross, but better yet, give platelets, twice a month for a year. Donate your time to something you would like to see made better. Give money to The Valerie Hanna/Sept. 11 Fund to help support research against biotechnology weapons and the terrible naturally occurring viruses that kill so effectively for which we have yet no antidote.
Let us turn this into something positive in the name of my mom and all the others who died or gave their lives. - submitted: 2/8/2002 3:31:23 PM

Thomas Hannafin was a high school and college basketball star on Staten Island. When he followed his eldest brother, Kevin, into the Fire Department, he joined Ladder Company 5 in Greenwich Village. The captain there, John Drennan, a football coach on Staten Island, was building the firehouse into an athletic powerhouse, Kevin said. Then Captain Drennan and two others in the company died from injuries in a 1994 fire. "Being so young on the job, it affected him deeply," Kevin, a member of another company in Brooklyn, said of his brother. On Friday, Kevin was part of a search team, including members of Ladder 5, that found the bodies of Thomas, 36, and four other members of his group in the mound of trade center rubble. Kevin carried his brother's helmet out of the wreckage. "It was the proudest moment of my life," he said. "It means a lot for firefighters, in firefighter tradition, that members of their company carry them out. That day, I was part of that company." - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:24:26 PM

Dana, you were a really cool guy, I knew you since the 4th grade! After high school, I didn't see you again until the 10-year reunion. Yet, when we talked, the 10 years seemed like only a few months. And the 1/2 hour we talked seemed like just 5 minutes. We weren't close friends, but you were always one of my buddies. I just want to say thank you. David Kasten - submitted: 1/21/2004 9:01:02 PM

It is always sad when we see a young one die To little Christine Hanson you have touched the hearts of many. Your story has touched me deeply.
Here is a poem in your loving memory

My name is Christine Hanson.
I am only two years old.
I am going for a ride,
or that’s what I am told.

I am sitting here quietly,
next to my mom and dad.
I am having a fun time.
Everyone seems glad.

Why is he yelling Daddy?
Please tell me what' s wrong!
Please don’t cry Mommy,
this ride won't be that long!

Why are we getting up
and moving to the back?
Why is everyone crying?
Why is she being attacked?

What did I do wrong?
Why are they yelling at us?
Why is everyone screaming?
What is all the fuss?

I thought you said that
this plane ride would be fun.
Is this a game Mommy?
Am I it, am I the one?

I think I will hide behind you,
so that I don't get caught.
Daddy this isn't fun anymore!
This isn't what I thought.

Why do I see buildings
right out the next window?
Shouldn't we stop now?
Shouldn't we go slow?

What was that loud boom?
Why do I see fire?
What just happened Daddy?
We should have been higher!

We have hit a building,
the World Trade Center I think.
I am slowly dying now.
I can't open my eyes to blink.

Where are you Mommy?
Why can't I hear your voice?
Why did they drive us here?
This wasn’t our choice.

My name is Christine Hanson,
I am only two years old.
We were going for a plane ride.
That’s what we were told.

I'll never go to prom.
I wont reach the age of three.
Why did this happen to these people?
Why did this happen to me?

I have waited one whole year to look at the victims' names that were on the airlines. I did this because I knew that there were children aboard and I didn't think I could stand seeing their names and ages. I knew I would cry at the reality of it. Well, I waited a year, and now, I am crying anyway. It is so hard to think about all the innocent people, especially the children. I pray for your family, Christine. I had a child to die in 1993 and I understand their grief. But with your death comes anger at the injustice of these murderers. I know that you and your parents are in heaven with God and the angels. And these evil men are somewhere else, paying for their sins. I have a granddaughter the same age as you. So I will never forget that you lived. I will light a candle in memory of you and the other children who died every day for as long as I am able. Carole from IL - submitted: 9/11/2002 4:11:37 PM

VASSILIOS G. HARAMIS Soothing Ferry Rides There was gardening, Greek music and food, soccer, keeping his two Audis in pristine condition and, of course, the children. These were all passions of Vassilios G. Haramis, a mechanical engineer for Washington Group International who lived on Staten Island. But it was the water that truly moved Mr. Haramis, 56, who grew up by the sea in southern Greece and, later, relished commuting in the morning on the Staten Island ferry, said his wife, Gloria. "I think it reminded him of Greece," she said. "The water was calm and it was soothing." But Mr. Haramis was deeply devoted to living in the United States. An immigrant who had come to New York in the 1970's as an engineering student at New York University, he received a master's degree from Columbia University and eventually wound up working at the World Trade Center. There, he survived the 1993 parking garage bombing. He and several colleagues waited until a helicopter came and rescued a pregnant woman before they descended more than 90 flights of stairs. Even after that, Mr. Haramis still adored working at the World Trade Center and riding the ferry to work, Mrs. Haramis said. "He loved the building, he loved being down there," she said. "That was his place." - submitted: 10/31/2001 10:50:47 PM

Peace Joe Casey Joe Casey (Bloomingdale, NJ ) March 23, 2002 I was touring one of the government houses with a group of 56 7th-grade girls and 5 fellow teachers in Williamsburg, Virginia when we heard the whispers that the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane, then a second plane, then the collapse of one and then the second tower. We kept this information from the students as we were slated to go on to Washington, D.C. the next day and had to keep up a strong front for them. The school reached the Coordinating teacher and said - "You are wanted home, now." As we had traveled to Williamsburg the day before by bus, we rounded up the girls and told them very calmly that we were returning to the hotel, they were to call their parents to let them know that we were safe, and to repack all belongings. After the calls were made I was able to call home and speak to my husband who told me call the boys. My youngest son Marc is a trader based in Chicago but mainly dealt with Cantor Fitzgerald and was on the phone with them when the plane hit. Through Marc, I got to know T.J. not as a name but as a person - a person who made this world a better place. I feel that wherever his soul is now - he is making it better for those who will follow. The world has lost a very special friend, husband, father, and optimist who encouraged others to always look at a glass as being half full. T.J., you will be missed not only for the moment - but for a lifetime. God Bless. -Noni Noni St. Amand (Bloomfield Hills, MI ) March 13, 2002 Timmy, Since the day I tripped over you early in our freshman year at DePaul High School it is hard to imagine anyone who has meant more to me or had a greater influence on my life than you. From our earliest days hitchhiking up and down route 23 and eating nochos late at night in the kitchen of your parents’ house (and usually beingyelled at from upstairs to keep it down), you were my truest friend. I have so many memories that have brought so many smiles (and tears) to my face. You are one of only 2 people that I can remember exactly where and when I met you (the other being my wife, to whom you introduced me). I remember playing ultimate frisbee in the DePaul High School Field. I remember betting your big afro and $50.00(and a TV career) against my own hair one new year’s eve. You won, I lost (along with Steve), and the whole wrestling team followed our lead. I remember pulling over on the side of the road between Ringwood and West Milford to debate marks on the road. We were going to “write a letter” to find out who was right. We never did, but we laughed about it for over 20 years. I remember so many nights out over so many years where we “lost” everyone else so we could talk (god I miss talking to you). My wife used to tell me when we were getting together to make sure that I talked to other people and not just you because I would lose myself in conversation with you. (I’d like to think we were on the same “wave length”. Funny how we would spend so much time talking about our wife and kids. There were thousands of phone calls over the years. How many times I called just to pick a fight or debate something just for fun. I feel so lucky that over the last year and a half we were able to get together so many times for lunch. (Thank god we didn’t have real jobs). Timmy, I owe you so much!!! Aside from keeping me sane and helping me find my way through life, you (and Patty) introduced me to my wife (for which I can never thank the two of you enough). You got me started on my career not once but twice. You taught me to appreciate what I had and what I had accomplished. You always made me feel like I had succeeded and should feel good about myself (probably your greatest gift). I don’t know how good a person I am today but I know I am a much better person because you were a big part of my life. Through the sadness I realize how lucky I was to have known you. I learned so much from you, and am so fortunate to have known you. It somehow seems appropriate that the last time I saw you we were drinking champagne (way too much for lunch). Strange, but we reminisced about our lives (mine was about to change, yours…). I knew you thought that I was making a mistake but you ordered champagne (a lot) to toast my decision and wish me luck. (That was so typical, a decision made, let’s look forward, it will work out.) I can’t help but think of that last lunch as a toast to all the good times and deep conversation that we shared. The memories of them mean more to me than I could ever explain to anyone. Timmy, you were right about so many things over the years but never more right than when you told me about Patty. You always told me that she kept you on the right path and made your life complete. Since you left us, I have come to understand everything that you said. Rest easy my friend - your girls that you loved so much are in good and sure hands. She’s got what it takes to lead the team. T you were a good friend, my best friend and YOU WERE AGREAT MAN!!! March 11, 2002 Today is six months since the September 11 attacks, and, as I have done every day for the past six months, I thought of TJ and Patty. They are old friends from DePaul, and I never realized all I had learned from TJ until he was gone. I guess that's always the way. When I first heard that he was missing I thought oh please, someone else, but not him, not someone with so much energy and appreciation for life. That is the one beautiful, outstanding memory I have of him - that mentality that life is a wonderful adventure. That is his legacy to me, and to my children, who never met him but now know him through me. My son is named Timothy John, and he now knows all about the first Timothy John in my life - a funny, kind kid who had one of the sharpest minds I have ever encountered. My favorite memory of TJ from DePaul was watching him with the parents - no other kid was as slick in dealing with them. It illustrates the deftness he had with people, I guess he was just born with it - he could talk to anyone and put them at ease. One night he gave me a ride home from a party and it was late, and because I thought I would get in trouble he walked me to my door and talked to my Dad. Absolutely snowed him. I was a few HOURS late! I thought I was in for it, and TJ just calmed the waters like a master and my Dad didn't even think to be mad after TJ got done with him. I could see that spark in his children at the service, three impossibly cute girls who look so much like him. Patty I think of you every day and I will never forget your incredible husband. Suellen (Steffich) Rizzo (North Kingstown, RI ) March 11, 2002 I have thought long and hard about what I would like to write as a tribute to TJ. I guess if I thought longer, I'd come up with something so profound. But, all I can think about are the great times I had with TJ in my long ago past. I had seen TJ at Jamie's home a few years ago, and at a couple of weddings. I am so sad that I never got to know TJ and Patty with their beautiful girls but I will always remember them. I know it's very silly, but I remember being with our crowd at Jesse James in Kinnelon and TJ was the first person (man) to show me the dance move that only men can do. I'm sorry if you don't know what I mean, but he would (it's got to do with the giration of the hips!). Now, anytime I see that move, I think of TJ. While this terrible thing was happening on 9/11, I didn't know that TJ worked in the World Trade Tower. That just showed me how far away I was. I am so sorry I didn't get to share in his life in some way and I am jealous of those who were able to. TJ was a great person. I want to share a picture of him and our friend Win. We were all at the Centennial Bash for the Statue of Liberty in 1986 -- what a great time. This is the TJ I will always remember. Patty, Cori, Casey and Amy, I am so sorry for your loss. You all have lost the BEST man. God bless you TJ and to you, Patty and your girls. My love and thoughts are with you all. Robin (Barker) Farrell (Alexandria, VA ) March 8, 2002 It's taken me a while to write this because, after all, what can anyone possibly say that would do justice to a life as well-lived and well-loved as TJ's? I drove up from Raleigh to NJ for TJ's memorial service hoping to be able to comprehend what had happened. I felt so far away that I could not really and truly believe it. And I wanted to be there for my friend and his brother, Jamie and his entire family. It was during that long drive that it suddenly hit me that I did not know TJ as an adult. I hadn't actually seen him in years. In my mind, TJ & Patty were still 16! The reason that never registered with me before was because every time you saw Jamie you would automatically ask about T. And Jamie would tell the latest TJ story. Always with love and usually laughter. I knew about TJ's jobs, various schools, when he and Patty went from friends to dating, got married, had kids. All of this I knew through Jamie. I know of no two brothers who are so close. I remember noticing it in second grade - how proud J was of his little brother and how he always made sure T knew where to go. Even in high school when they were bickering (sorry, boys, but these were not always intelligent debates!), you knew neither one of them could ever hold a grudge against anyone -- let alone each other. They were, and are, alike that way. They could drive you crazy - but they'd always make you laugh. TJ's memorial service was wonderful and I want to thank his family for that. Listening to J, their nieces and Patty's uncle speak was like listening to one of Jamie's stories. The love and the laughter felt by this family for each other were felt by everyone there. And it made me realize that the 16 year old TJ I knew was not that much different from the adult he grew up to be. The strength and faith of the entire Hargrave family gave me strength and faith. Something I needed badly at the time. So, again, thank you. My favorite TJ story: TJ was a not-so minor celebrity in my eyes because he had a recurring role on "The Guiding Light" when we were in high school. I remember how cool I thought that was. Well, one time, for whatever reason teenage boys do anything, the entire wrestling team, including TJ, shaved their heads. TJ had me in stitches telling me the reactions of all of the adults on the set when he showed up for work. They basically freaked out and, if I'm remembering this right, he worked that day and then his character was written out - just disappeared. I was floored that he'd basically been fired. I'm still impressed that something that would have devasated the average actor, let alone a kid, was just another funny story for T. A friend at work work gave me a bracelet with TJ's name on it this week. I will always treasure it because it will remind me to say a prayer for him and for Patty, their three beautiful girls, and for Jamie. And it will give me a chance to tell TJ stories to anyone who asks about it. Mary Marcantonio (Raleigh, NC ) March 5, 2002 marymarc40@hotmail.com - submitted: 4/10/2002 11:13:34 AM

I last saw T.J. at the 20th DePaul reunion the previous year. He was the last one I spoke to that night and the same way I always remembered him to be. Genuine, gregarious, and a great guy. We couldn't stop talking about our kids. T.J. expressed it in such a way that it was bigger then what we take for granted daily. We exchanged business cards and I'm sorry we never got together after that. I like to leave you with this and thanks for letting me share. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. PLEASE KEEP THIS PRAYER GOING If I Knew If I knew it would be the last time That I'd see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep. If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more. If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day. If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute to stop and say "I love you," instead of assuming you would KNOW I do. If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away. For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything just right. There will always be another day to say "I love you," and certainly there's another chance to say our "Anything I can do?" But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, And today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight. So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day, That you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish. So hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear, Tell them how much you love them and that you'll always hold them dear Take time to say "I'm sorry," "Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay." And if tomorrow never comes, you'll have no regrets about today. Thanks, BILL Bill Kohl (Laurel, MD ) February 12, 2002 I remember T.J. from our days at DePaul H.S., Wayne, NJ. I graduated a year or so behind him. Though we didn't know each other well, we knew each other by name, mostly through T.J.'s involvement in wrestling. What I remember about T.J. is his smile, his friendliness, his animated personality, almost "impish" in the way he would playfully talk to Sister Pat. I also remember T.J in the way he undeniably loved his then girlfriend, Patty. And so it is with a heavy heart that I send my thoughts and prayers to his wife, Patty, his children, and to all his family and friends. Speaking as one of the DePaul community, I know we have lost one of "ours", but are all blessed to have known him. May God's love give you peace. On of my most recent memories of Uncle T. was a few years ago. A boyfriend at the time came w/ me to a family get together at T and Patty's. They talked for a while, Uncle T. (along w/ all my other uncles) politely interogatted him At one point my uncle says to my boyfriend, you seem like a really nice upstanding guy, but if you do anything to hurt my niece I will have to kick your ass, just wanted to get that straight. Then of course he shook his hand and told him to come in for another beer.

Not a day goes by that I don't think about you Uncle T. I miss you and love you so much.
Peace,
Mandy

T - I've spent every second of every day of the last 4 1/2 months thinking about you. My mind will always be filled with wonderful memories of our 20 years together. Although way too short (no I don't mean you), I am so grateful for that time. I love you for so many reasons, way too many to go into, but... to list a few: your absolute devotion to and love for Cori, Casey, Amy and me, for all you taught me over the years, the confidence you instilled in me, your level-headedness with our girls, the fun we knew we would have when you were around, and in general, just the brilliant person you were. I thought about it the other day, and if I was asked to describe you in one word, it would be BRILLIANT - that was your entire being - you were the smartest person I ever knew, and your caring, loving personality shone on all of us, enabling us to bask in that brilliant light and warmth that was you.

I know the impact you have had on so many of us, through the way you lived your life, will stay with us, and guide us, forever.

I will love you forever and miss you always.

Love, Patty

My husband and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting T.J. through our dear friends Kathy, his sister, and her husband, Kevin, many years ago. Although I was seldom in his presence following that intial meeting,I never forgot T.J.'s unique zest for life and sincerity-Indeed a rare combination. The day we heard that the Hargrave family lost T.J., the surreal tragedy of Sept. 11 became a stark reality for my own family. I wish our dear friends Kathy and Kevin and the entire Hargrave family, the strength to heal and to one day find a sense of peace.

It is so hard to write this, I still can't believe I'll never see you again T but everytime I look at your girls I see you. Please know how much we love Cori, Casey, Amy and Patti and we will always be there for them. The best thing you ever did was to marry Pat, you know that your girls are going to grow up with the best of both of you guiding them, Patti will always remind them of the wondeful Father you were and would have continued to be had you had the chance. Love you and miss you baby brother.

to all that knew him i'm sorry. i myself never knew him. just seeing what all of you have wrote about him made him stand out the most in my heart. he seemes to remind me of someone that i once knew, but for the life of me can not remember who. when someone stated that he once "warned" a past boyfriend to not do anything stupid and then politly shook his hand and invited him in for a beer, that reminds me of my self of what i would do with my twin girls. i am deeply sorry for your loss. in my eyes your uncle, brother, father, and husband was the real, true american hero.

I met Eric about 4 years ago when my older sister married with his older brother. We get to hang out with each other during the holodays only, since he goes to school in Boston and I'm in LA. On July 2001, he moved to LA and decided to go to Cal State Fullerton. I was very happy and invited him to stay with me in the same apartment. We lived together all this time. I was so lonely before he came to LA, however he cherished my life when he was with me. We were like brothers, and we hang out every day. I take him to eat, hang out, and everywhere. I would say that when he was in LA, that was one of my happiest time ever in my life. Eric will always be with me for the rest of my life. I never expected this tragedy, however he left me very very very good unforgetable memories we share together. I love you Eric with all my heart, and I believe we will meet again in heaven. I can't even talk to your brother Tim or Sergio - the only people who knew I knew you - they are gone too. Tom, you were always so smart. Please continue to watch over and guide me - help me create a change in this world like those we'd speak of. I have to do something great..and when I do, I will know that you had some part in it. One of the few people who had faith in me. Maybe the only one. I pray for your family always. God bless them, God bless you. W. Ward Haynes really wanted the car. Not that it made a whole lot of sense. The car was a Porsche Boxster. Two people could squeeze in it, and that was about it. But there was the matter of the golf clubs. Both he and his wife, Ann, played golf. It did not look like two bags could even fit in the trunk. Ward-O, as he was known, insisted they could, if they were square-bottomed bags rather than round- bottomed ones. And then there was the matter of the children: three of them. Where would they go? Well, the family had a larger vehicle for full-family trips. And starting in August, Mr. Haynes, 35, was no longer commuting by car from his home in Rye, N.Y., to his office in Stamford, Conn., but taking the train to his new job as a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald. So why shouldn't he have a fun weekend car? At least, that was his argument. Hesitantly, Mrs. Haynes surrendered. He got his car the weekend before Sept. 11. "The family could not fit in it - ever," Mrs. Haynes said. "But he really wanted it." He went zipping around, giving everyone a ride. He picked up his 85-year-old grandmother. Mrs. Haynes figured that ride would not last long. They were out for two hours. - submitted: 10/31/2001 11:57:12 PM

Roberta Bernstein Heber could appear to be all business, but those close to her knew that she was a soft touch, the kind of person who briskly went down her "to do" list but had smiles and hugs to spare at the end of the day. Ms. Heber was an assistant vice president and a systems analyst at Marsh & McLennan. Her two daughters and son were proud that the mother who stayed at home with them when they were growing up went back to school at night for a master's degree in computer science, and a second career. "That was very brave of her," said Melissa Bernstein. "We used to say to her, `We should get some of your salary because we trained you by letting you boss us around.' " "She was really impressive, actually," Ms. Bernstein said. - submitted: 10/31/2001 11:24:19 PM

Five years may have passed but none of us have forgotten. Just thinking about you makes me want to cry. But sometimes I'll just think about calling you when something big happens but then I remember that I can't, cause your not there. I never truly knew how much you ment to me until you were gone. I still remember when you used to be the only one to play football or baseball with us on holidays. And now that it's my senior year of high school, I'm thinking about you more and wishing you were here, but I guess you'll just have to watch my graduate from up there. Raul Hernandez   51 Washington Heights, NY United States
Raul Hernandez was happiest at home having dinner and watching the New York Mets with his brother, or just talking on the telephone with his three sisters. No matter how tough his days were as supervisor of maintenance for Cantor Fitzgerald, Mr. Hernandez, 51, was never too tired to check in, sometimes talking for hours at a time. It was his duty, he used to tell his sister Gladys Estepan, trying to explain his need to be provider and protector. He yearned for the day when his two other sisters, who live in the Dominican Republic, would make their way to New York to be with the rest of the family. Even when money was tight, he would send $400 a month back home for them. ``We are only five children, a small family,'' Mrs. Estepan said. ``He was to us like our mother and father, always wanting to help for the family. We hope in our hearts that he will come home and we can help him.'' - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:10:55 PM

9/10/01 - 11pm. I was going to bed but had a very eerie, sick feeling in my stomach. I didn't know why. I don't do it often, but I prayed to God that nothing bad would happen. My sister's wedding was coming up, and I didn't want anyone to get sick or die right then and put a damper on things... 9/11/01 - 8:35am. It was an absolutely gorgeous September day. Oops...late for work. I rushed to my desk, turned on the radio, got myself together and tried to look busy. I loved my office...on the third floor, beautiful view facing west, 15 miles from Manhattan. If not for the trees, I would have had quite a nice view of the New York City skyline. The music suddenly stopped and they were talking about a plane having hit one of the Twin Towers and that the upper floors were on fire. I ran to tell everyone but they were already in the conference room watching the TV. How could any pilot not see the building? How could they be so off course? And flying so low? How, I thought, would they ever be able to put out that fire. And then, there was an explosion in the other Tower. I was puzzled how the fire from one building could start a fire in the other. My thoughts, at this point, were not coherent. How could this be happening? A second jet had hit the South Tower! This was no accident... After the 1993 bombing, the terrorists said they weren't finished...they would fly jets into the Towers and destroy them. People snickered at such a thought...but I never forgot. They did it...right before our very eyes... I watched on TV as both buildings collapsed. I had friends and colleagues working in the buildings. I could only imagine how many thousands of people were going to die. I once had a job offer to work at the World Trade Center...but I didn't want to travel downtown... 9/12/01 - 8:25am. I arrived at work. My building was engulfed with smoke. It smelled awful. Was there a fire? And then it dawned on me and everyone else...it was smoke from the Twin Towers. The winds had shifted. It was just the smell of burning buildings ...and people... My husband called me at work. Our friend, Tom Hetzel, was missing. He was my husband's former student and fellow volunteer fireman. He was also a New York City fireman. He had responded to the fire at the Towers...Ladder Company 13, I think. He was 34. He had a wife and 2-year old daughter. They found his remains in October. My husband was called for standby rescue duty with the fire department. But he came home early. There wasn't anyone to rescue. We lived in a home that was in the flight path to JFK Airport. For four days it was deafly quiet. I never thought I'd miss the noisy jets. But the fighter jets did fly over twice a day. 9/11/07 - Six years later...They say you forget. They say it's time to forget. But you don't forget. You still cry. I caught glimpses of the ceremonies throughout the day, and I still cried. 6:30pm. ABC World News. They showed recaps of today's ceremonies. They showed a man at ground zero reading names of the deceased. He read, "Thomas J. Hetzel." We moved to Florida to try and forget. But no, you never forget...and you never stop crying... - submitted: 11/20/2007 3:08:53 PM

Dear Donna and Family~

I just finished watching Brothers on Holy Ground. I was compelled to take a minute and let you know that I have not forgotten.

Donna you are such a thoughtful person, in the way in which you spoke of your loss. It brought tears to my eyes, and would have made your husband so very proud. Your kids will go far with a mom like you to guide them.

I never met your Brian, but I will never forget him or all the others who perished in the tragedy of September 11,2001.

May God bless those who love and miss him, and sustain you until one day you see your beloved again.

Donna & Family, I am once again glued to my television set, five years later, and still remembering all the brave souls that lost their lives on that tragic day in 2001. I am watching a program called WTC 9/11 Stories/The Ruins and you have just recited the poem off the memorial card from Brian's service. I didn't have the chance to write it all down, but your words touched my heart. I would like to print up that poem and have it framed in my home, so we NEVER FORGET. If you would be so kind as to post the entire poem here, I am sure there are many who would like to keep those touching words. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, today...and everyday. I met him only once. It was at a friends wedding. Mark was the nicest person. We hit it off great, and he had a positiveness that I will never forget. For being so young he seemed to have experienced so many great experiences. I think that had everything to do with his positive, friendly, and loving personlity. I hung out with him for two day, but remember him for the rest of my life. My friends and I that had met him that weekend talk about him alot. It amazes me that meeting a guy just for a second of a group of Ms. guys lives, has affected our lives so much. If any of us can be as good of a person as he was, it will be a tribute to him. He truly seems to be the nicest guy I ever met. - submitted: 4/18/2002 8:30:50 AM

Tara Y. Hobbs was crowned the "e-mail queen" by her friends. "She kept in touch with everybody - everybody from middle school, high school, college, work, social life - through e-mail," said her sister Sherian Hobbs. "She was always planning get-togethers." And some of her best friends were her brothers and sisters. As the youngest of five children growing up on Long Island, Tara Hobbs was very close to Sherian, the oldest. "When Tara was 8 and I was 16, I took her with me on my dates," Sherian said. "The three of us ate ice creams and walked around in the neighborhood. She smiled a lot, never got into the way, and we didn't mind having her." When Tara became an adult, she and her sister still belonged to a threesome, but the third person was new: Tara's boyfriend, Paul Lalanne, with whom she lived in Brooklyn. The three planned to open an office for Primerica, an insurance company under Citigroup. The week before the disaster, Tara, 31, who worked in the insurance branch of Aon, received her license to sell health and life insurance. Tom was the "Nice Guy" of the many brokers at the time we worked together at Bierbaum-Martin. I was a Communications Engineer among very demanding and stressed out brokers. We always liked dealing with Tom because he didn't yell or scream or curse when he needed something or had a problem. He found a way to asked nicely. So when he asked for something, I went out of my way for him. We only worked together a few years and got to know each other through train rides to and from work. He always spoke highly of his family and where he lived and tried to mentor me about the in's and out's of the business. You will be missed Tom. Be your family's guardian angel. To the Hoey Family- I never met your father. I was given his name as the name of a person missing on 9/11 at the installation of Bishop Mark Sisk in the Episcopal Diocese of New York on Sept 29th. I had no information about him, but I prayed for him that day, and the next, and the next. At some point in the fall I found out that he worked for the Port Authority, and that he had a wife, Eileen and three children, Brian, Robert, Michael, and Sharon. I pray for the repose of your father's soul and for your family every day, and will continue to do so. May God grant you peace.

I didn't know the "Hoffman twins" as adults; however, when I was in 8th grade and they were in 6th at Our Lady of Mercy, I was their class patrol guard. Growing up, I was one of those kids who was constantly picked on and ridiculed by the popular kids. I have never forgotten how both Steve and Greg always greeted me in the mornings and ribbed me good-naturedly about my "official" role. Even as kids, they were easy-going, love-everyone kind of people. I was so sad to hear about Steve and pray for the emotional comfort for his surviving family. A life worth living, taken away in an instant.
The unfairness is incomprehensible, the sadness is excruciating.

On September 11th, my darling Judy was taken from us by the WTC disaster. She is not alone, for it was easy to love her and be her friend, so we can assume that it is also true in Heaven.
My 16 years with Judy were not enough. I love and miss her terribly …
we all miss her.

One life, so important, among so many, equally important.
I am so sad and grieve for all.
My wish for all is the same I wish for myself;
to heal, somehow … sometime.
Bless you my love. - Bobby W - submitted: 5/1/2002 2:06:12 PM

She Was the Light Of His Life

In the days after the terrorist attack took the woman he called the light of his life, Robert Winkis clutched onto tangible treasures reflecting the radiance and warmth that was Judith Hofmiller, his soulmate and soon-to-be wife.

Winkis struggled to keep his composure as he recalled how she regularly wrote him notes before heading to work. He happened onto a recent one in a kitchen drawer of the Brookfield, Conn., home the couple shared. Under red hearts Hofmiller wrote: "Happy Breakfast. Thanks for the hug. Love, Judy." The top of the J was crafted into a smiley face. More hearts were followed by another expression of her feelings for the man she shared 16 of her 53 years with: "Judy loves Bobby."

"She had a talent for making people, even strangers, feel very comfortable, wanted," Winkis said. "For me, she was just a darling, the other half of my brain, a sounding board, partner and emotional support in every way."

Hofmiller made the most of every moment, Winkis said. On her commute to the World Trade Center from her native Connecticut - she was born in Milford and raised in Orange - to her job as senior software consultant at Marsh & McLennan, she would read or pursue a strong passion of hers: crocheting or cross- stitching items for friends.

Winkis described Hofmiller as a computer wiz and highly talented database programmer who started working at Marsh & McLennan three years ago on a contractual basis. Seeing her talent, dedication and team spirit, the firm renewed her contract several times, he said.

The company was in the midst of making her a permanent employee, Winkis said.

Hofmiller had many friends among her colleagues. Winkis said he will deliver the cross-stitch bib and bottle warmer she made for a supervisor who is due to give birth soon.

The couple had started to put into place details for their marriage this month. The joint bank account they recently opened was one of the more mundane but symbolic steps. "We were just going to do it quietly," Winkis said: a ceremony at Brookfield Town Hall, an informal gathering of friends and a honeymoon around Christmas. "We talked about going down south, where we were thinking we would someday retire. That was our master plan." -Collin Nash - submitted: 9/12/2008 3:33:27 PM

This is for Michael's precious family, whom he loved so well. This is especially for his dear Mommy.

I give you this one thought to keep --
I am with you still - I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still -- in each new dawn.

A police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 45-year-old George Howard of Hicksville, N.Y., was among the first to help after terrorists bombed the World Trade Center in 1993. This time it was his day off when the planes struck the complex, but he got a rescue truck and raced to the towers when he heard of the attack. A flying sheet of steel struck and killed him as he ran into the dust and smoke. ''I've gotten so many calls about how great my son was, from people whose lives he saved in fires and accidents,'' said his mother, Arlene Howard. The 16-year Port Authority employee also was a volunteer firefighter. - submitted: 10/19/2001 4:09:28 PM

George Howard was one of the finest and dedicated men I've ever known in this profession. He was blessed with many gifts and one of his best was teaching all of us in ESU how to do our job at the highest levels of professionalism and service to our fellow man. This man, this true selfless hero and public servant, died doing what he loved to do best. He gave his life in service to mankind. A more noble act no human being perform. I am most honored and privildeged to also call George Howard my friend, my buddy, my cohort, my teacher, and a man who I most admired and respected as a fellow police professional, but also a caring loving father who like all of us worried about his sons and what the future would hold for them. To George's sons Christopher and Robert, and to the Howard family, your son, brother, father was a great great man long before 9-11. His loss is as painful and hurtful to me his friend, and to the Port Authority Police Department's Emergency Service Unit as well I assure you. His memory will be honored forever here. That is my solemn pledge to you all. God Bless you always.

World Trade Center - South Tower - VP for KBW Trading Co. Kris Hughes was a man of great character and many talents. He was great athlete, outdoorsman, hard worker in all areas of his life, a political advocate, friend and family man. He touched the lives of so many people in a way that is nearly impossible to describe, but in a word, he touched us deeply. His presence in all of our lives is greatly missed and we are all doing our best to carry on in the way that Kris would want us to in his absence. He will NEVER be forgotten and our love for him has only deepened. His legacy lives on in all of our hearts now and for eternity. Namaste. - submitted: 12/20/2001 2:07:08 PM

I did not know Bobby Hughes, but I still think of him very often. He worked for Bank of America in the World Trade Center. He was a young man, only in his 20's. I picture him going to work that morning, dressed nicely, maybe planning his day in his head, minding his own business, probably not worrying about anything really major like the state of the nation, completely innocent, a good person just trying to make a living. And then the planes came…. The reason I think about this so often is that my son, Adam, who is also in his 20's, had a job offer at Bank of America in the World Trade Center in 2000. He really wanted to take it, but his wife did not want to move to NY. So he moved to Charlotte, NC and took a job with Bank of America there. But it could have been him, or he and Bobby could have been co-workers. So even though I know how lucky I am to still have my son, I think of Bobby and his family and feel their pain. I know how it is to lose a son. My oldest died at age 19 in 1993. So I pray for peace and healing for Bobby's family. Bobby is with the others that died that day, the angels, and God. And there are no tears in Heaven. Carole Monday DonnieMonday@aol.com - submitted: 9/11/2002 4:42:06 PM

Joseph G Hunter   32 South Hempstead, NY United States
World Trade Center - firefighter, New York Fire Department - submitted: 10/3/2001 8:39:31 AM

Long before he understood the dangers, Joe Hunter was love-struck by the sights and sounds of firefighting, the shiny red trucks with their bright lights and whirring sirens. The trucks from the South Hempstead Fire Department, whose firehouse was at the end of his block, could not pass his house without him racing behind on his Big Wheel. At age 8, Mr. Hunter would coax friends into mock rescue drills, using the family's water hose and a ladder. "He was just a kid," said Teresa Labo, his sister. "But whenever it came to anything about firefighting, he was always oh so serious. It was like he was destined." So by the time he was old enough to go off to college, to Hofstra, Mr. Hunter, 32, was no longer just dreaming of fighting fires. He had become a volunteer with the very department that fueled his passion. It was a feat that meant as much to him as the day in 1996 when he graduated from the New York City Fire Department's academy. His family, though proud, never stopped worrying. "God bless you," his mother would say on days when he rushed off to be with his squad, 288 in Maspeth, Queens. Hoping to comfort her, Mr. Hunter would always pause long enough to say: "Mom, don't worry about me. If anything ever happens, just know I loved the job." - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:39:31 PM

Mr. Hussa was an amazing human being. A brilliant man who could speak on the same level as anyone, without judgment. He would have given the shirt off his back to a stranger. I have no doubt that when he died he was trying to help others around him. The father of a very close friend of mine, we had several heartfelt discussions about the loss of my own father, for which I will always remember with much gratitude. He had a way of speaking that would put you at ease. I remember with great fondness being the guest at his ski house on the many weekends where he graciously taught my girlfriend, now wife, how to ski because I had no patience to do so. That was the kind of man he was. He loved his wife and sons tremendously and his pride was evident when he was around them. He was an athlete, scholar, and master chili cook. The world took a horrible loss on 9/11/01 with the passing of Mr. Hussa, and I promise to never forget. - submitted: 9/11/2006 8:56:40 AM

Capt. Walter Hynes was the person his extended family relied on for everything. If you needed your plumbing fixed or a room painted, Walter would do it. He would change your tire. He was the family lawyer. He even met his wife while lending a hand: he was helping another firefighter, Richard Fanning, move into a new house and was introduced to Mr. Fanning's sister. Captain of Ladder Company 13 at 85th Street and Lexington Avenue, Walter lived in Belle Harbor, Queens, with his wife, Veronica, and their three daughters. He had worked as a firefighter in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and put himself through law school at St. John's University at night. "He had no free time," a family member said yesterday, "because he was always doing for everyone else." - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:26:01 PM
