An angel in heaven to your wife and daughter you are! You wont remember me, but I lived on Crestwood. We would ride bikes togeather when you and your brother would ride up the street to ride in the circle.I remember your smile and you were always so sweet. Later in life we met again. Always joking about the big plaster football player that you had for the local little leage football team next to your barn. I still drive past when going to the old neighborhood and to other places around town. I blow your family a kiss and sometimes say a prayer that you are now with God and at peace. Jen and your daughter are beautiful, and she will never grow up not knowing you. Everyone you touched in PA misses and loves you and will always hold this day in our hearts as a day we all lost a friend. Smile like you always have, because the ones who are still here smile when we think of you. God bless and peace be with you and yours. You are truly a light that will never burn out.

I WANTED TO SEND YOU SOMETHING NICE, SO HERE IT GOES:

IF I KNEW
IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME THAT I'D SEE YOU FALL ASLEEP,
I WOULD TUCK YOU IN MORE TIGHTLY AND PRAY THE LORD, YOUR SOUL TO KEEP.
IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME THAT I SEE YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR,
I WOULD GIVE YOU A HUG AND KISS, AND CALL YOU BACK FOR ONE MORE.
IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME I'D HEAR YOUR VOICE LIFTED UP IN PRAISE,
I WOULD VIDEO TAPE EACH ACTION AND WORD, SO I COULD PLAY THEM BACK DAY BY DAY.
IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME, I COULD SHARE AN EXTRA MINUTE
TO STOP AND SAY, "I LOVE YOU," INSTEAD OF ASSUMING YOU WOULD KNOW I DO.
TOMORROW IS NOT PROMISED TO ANYONE, YOUNG OR OLD ALIKE, AND TODAY MAYBE THE LAST
CHANCE YOU GET TO HOLD YOUR LOVED ONE TIGHT.

SO NOELL, THAT IS WHY I REGREAT NOT TELLING YOU THAT LAST DAY HOW MUCH I DO CARE FOR YOU. I FIGURED YOU ALREADY KNEW, BUT MAYBE YOU DID NOT, AND NOW I KNOW HOW MUCH I MISS YOU AND CARE FOR YOU. MAY GOD BLESS YOU. - submitted: 9/4/2002 3:09:51 PM

Joe,
I am writing about you for my speech class. Here is my poem for you:
That morning he got the call
Bring not one truck or two but all
The towers are burning with smoke thick and black
No time for goodbyes, no time to pack
In to the inferno he did race in
With a hat an axe and a few other men
With out a doubt you are my hero
Yet another who did not return from ground zero

For all of Jay Magazine's achievements as a chef and then as catering sales manager of Windows on the World, his happiest moments were spent with his 13-year-old daughter, Melissa, and 10-year-old son, Andrew. His wife, Susan, is convinced that her husband's desire to hold his children close sprang from the early loss of his parents. Mr. Magazine, 48, was involved in every aspect of his children's lives, she said. Last spring, he watched Melissa - playing with her school's team in the Junior Knicks program - sink a layup in front of 19,000 people during halftime at a Knicks-Celtics game at Madison Square Garden. Mr. Magazine loved to cook with Andrew. Their specialty was hot salsa, a recipe that Andrew is now teaching his mother. The couple would have celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17. "This year," Mrs. Magazine said, "Andrew, Melissa and I shared gifts, dined with my brother and Jay's sister, toasted a wonderful family life, and spent the evening looking at photos and celebrating our 19 years of happy marriage." They say everyone in the world is separated by just six degrees. I am removed from you by less, though I was not in your lifetime. My mother knows your wife, only now. If everyone is separated by six degrees, all New Yorkers are separated by less and less with each passing day...You are in my heart, your wife is in my heart, and your children will be in my heart...forever. the day

it is september 11th, 2001
the day eternally etched onto the looking glass of time
it is the day death sits on the edge
dangling its sinister keys

planes swallowed by buildings
people spit out like bullets
inconsequential rolls of terrible dice
even the grass cannot hide
and the applauding streets leave me weak
i am a fetus corded to the unsure campfire

mother, mother- tell me again of the
owl and the pussy cat
for i fall into the crevice of the drum
sung by the omniscient narrator
there are no words to describe the horrors

the world trade center, those mountains
erupting into dust
in one infinite hour
eagles broken like inconvenient sparrows
i fear for new york and her sisters
i tremble with my country

where is the start
where is the finish
who is the victor-

Gregory J. Malone was the personification of Wall Street - hard-working, fast-living, a risk taker. And he had found his soul mate. "He was a real guy's guy, but that's O.K. because he was scared to death of me," his fiancée, Fiona Fitzgerald, who is Irish and works for a biotechnology company, said with a laugh. "He loves fishing, and he's particularly fond of hockey and the New York Yankees. He wouldn't miss a game of the Yankees whether he was at the stadium or watching it on TV in some bar, much to my dismay." The two met three and a half years ago in Hoboken, N.J., where Mr. Malone had a house. Mr. Malone was 42, and worked as a bond broker for Maxcor/Euro Brokers. His friends knew him as someone they could party with. But they also saw that Ms. Fitzgerald brought out the romantic side of the longtime bachelor. One of Greg's last phone calls was to his friend of 18 years, Kevin Croutier, a broker at Lehman Brothers. They talked about the first plane that had hit. "He was about to settle down," Mr. Croutier said. "He'd just gone to look at lawn furniture, which surprised me. The last place I could imagine him was at Home Depot looking for lawn furniture. But I bet he's happy now, because the Yankees are going to win." - submitted: 10/31/2001 10:48:48 PM

People at his memorial Mass kept using the same words over and over about Teddy Maloney. Loyal. Modest. Magic with kids. A true friend. At 32, Mr. Maloney was the kind of young husband who called his wife, Brinley, three or four times a day, especially since she was seven months pregnant with their second child ? another girl, they had learned. He had already made his morning call home to Darien, Conn., at 8:40 that Tuesday from the TradeSpark offices of Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor, just minutes before the attack. "I'm not sure he liked his work that much," his mother, Sally Maloney, recalled. "If he had had his way, he would have opened a string of carwashes. He always wanted to be in control of his own business." And to be closer to home and his extended family, the girls' hockey and lacrosse teams he coached. He took the job in the city only because Cantor Fitzgerald had promised a transfer to the Darien office in February, just after the baby's arrival. Her name will be Teddy Bray Maloney. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:19:31 PM

Christian Maltby was so handsome that his college friends used him as bait. They would take him to a bar, wait for the girls to flock around him, and then move in to flirt with them. Mr. Maltby was usually too reserved to make any moves of his own. "He was very handsome, but he didn't believe it," said his younger brother, Jason Maltby. With his dark brown hair, blue eyes and unassuming manner, the elder Mr. Maltby was a reluctant heartthrob who signed with Wilhelmina Models to help pay his way through Fordham. He appeared in Rolling Stone magazine, and on the covers of teenage romance novels. He later became a vice president for currency trading at Cantor Fitzgerald. Mr. Maltby, 37, gravitated toward a quiet life in Chatham, N.J. He spent weekends with his wife, Jane, and their three children, Max, Morgan and Samuel, in the backyard. He was training to be a Sunday school teacher at his church, and liked to read novels that he swapped with his brother. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:00:08 PM

It seemed as if everyone in Astoria knew Frank Mancini. He might as well have been living in a Greek or an Italian village instead of the big city of New York. He met his future wife, Anastasia, in first grade at Public School 17 in Queens. They went to the prom at Long Island City High School. By the time they were married on May 21, 2000, they considered it their 10th anniversary - of dating. Frank was Spanish and Italian. Anastasia was Greek. They went to Mykonos for their honeymoon. Six feet tall, red- haired, riding a motorcycle and laughing, he stood out. "Everybody loved Frankie in Astoria," said his doting mother, Lea. "Frankie was No. 1." Mr. Mancini, 26, had been a laborer with Local 79, his dad's union, since he was 18. When his father retired, Frank continued working construction at the World Trade Center, the only job he had ever known. About two weeks before the plane hit the north tower, he had moved from the basement to the 107th floor. Mr. Mancini couldn't wait to take his 3- month-old daughter, Sophia, to Disney World. "How old does she have to be?" he asked his wife. "I think we should wait till she's 3 or 4, at least," Anastasia said. He was also planning her wedding. - submitted: 10/31/2001 9:57:59 PM

"Some People"

Some people come into our lives and quickly go,
like waves briefly touching the shore.
Some people stay for awhile, and give us a deeper
understanding of what is truly important in this
life. They touch our souls. We gain strength from
the footprints they have left on our hearts,
and we will never ever be the same…..

I will be playing you in a play that is a tribute to everyone that was affected by 9/11. I am very proud to represent you and I will try my best to convey your strength, courage, and message to everyone who comes to see us. This is how much Edward J. Martinez of Elmhurst, Queens, knew how to appreciate the banquet of life: he carried a blanket in his car trunk so he would always be ready for a picnic. And with one of those aluminum-looking things that folds up into nothing, said his wife, Helen, wherever they went, biking in Connecticut, up to Vermont, he was ready. Also, there was a great list of things Mr. Martinez loved. He loved skiing, loved ice skating, loved to sky-dive, loved the opera. He lived, at 60, in the house he had grown up in on Cornish Avenue. He and his childhood friends from the block, now grown and married, formed themselves into an unofficial gang: the Screwball Club. Mr. Martinez was an operations manager at Cantor Fitzgerald. His daughter Stephanie turned 18 four days after the attack on the World Trade Center. Mr. Martinez's 20th wedding anniversary would have been Sept. 19. Friends came over on both occasions and, on the anniversary, took Mrs. Martinez and her daughter out to dinner. A Navy veteran, Mr. Martinez could not bear two things: people who "dissed" America, and racist remarks. He draped a flag on his house on Memorial Day and kept it out all summer. As a memorial to her husband, Mrs. Martinez plans to leave the flag out year round. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:06:51 PM

Robert Gabriel Martinez   23 Summit Security Services- Security Guard, NY United States
Robert Martinez was my fiance and my very best friend. Summit Security Services held a Memorial Service for Robert and his fallen colleagues on Tuesday 10/23/01. It was a beautiful service and they will always be remembered as heroes. Many of the security guards had posts in the Lobby, which means that they had more than enough time to get out of the buildings safely. However, they chose to stay and stare in the face of danger to help others who were injured, disoriented and disabled. They had no experience nor training in dealing with a crisis of this magnitude, but nevertheless they were determined to do anything and everything in their power to help and assist others, even if it meant risking their own lives. There are many survivors today because of the bravery of the security officers. Unfortunately their efforts have been overlooked and over shadowed by the policeman & firefighters that were lost. They were undoubtedly our most noble and selfless heroes, who served above and beyond their call of duty. May God have mercy on thier souls. - submitted: 11/2/2001 1:32:59 PM

I didn't know you Robert, but I read about how you stayed in the building to help others out. Trish and I grew up together in the same neighborhood. We went to the same schools and even dated best friends. Trish touched the hearts of everyone she came in contact with. She had such a beautiful smile, it could light up a whole room. I know when Trish had to walk to the gates of heaven, she didn't have to wait long,,, St.Peter gave her her wings and said fly my child fly….I am forever grateful to have known her and to have shared many fond memories. It saddens me to know that I will never be able to see Trish walking down the street and updating me on the latest gossip. If I were granted three wishes I would want one more day with her, the ability to stop time so her family could have comfort in her safe return home and lastly a lifetime of happiness for Trish with her unborn child.

Trish: If you are looking over my shoulder as I type this, please know that we love you dearly and miss you much. Take care and fly high...Rest in Peace - submitted: 8/29/2003 2:15:45 PM

Charlie, you were and always will be the love of my life. I still can't believe you were taken away from me right in front of my eyes. My life has not been the same without you. Sometimes I dont know how I can go on another day without you, but I do. I am trying to be strong, but I miss you so much. We were so connected emotionally, mentally and physically that your death has left such a huge whole in my being. The only thing that gets me through the night is knowing I will be with you again some day. I only hope with time the hurt I feel diminishes. And that I can find a little bit of the happiness we shared. Until that day, I wish you all my love and hope you are at peace, my love. Keithroy is my brother. Our father was Captain Reynold White of the New York City Fire Department. My earliest memories of my dad were as a fireman and I would always say that I was going to become a fireman, just like my dad. As I grew older, I chose not to follow my dad, but I was overjoyed that Keith decided to become a fireman, especially after my dad passed away in 1999. To me it was as though I would always see my dad when I saw Keith, the New York City Fireman! September 11th is and will always be the worst day in my life. I lost my brother and many friends that day. Keith was my hero, but on that day, he became a hero to every true American alive. Little Brother, may you rest forever in eternal peace.
I'll miss you.

Edward Mazzella worked on Wall Street for over 40 years, the last few as a senior vice president for equity sales at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was killed three days before his retirement date, Sept. 14. His life's other enduring constant was family. Mr. Mazzella, 62, and his wife, Kay, were married for 40 years. Since early in their marriage, they had hosted a grand family dinner every Christmas Eve. About two dozen people always came for a spread of crabmeat sauce on pasta, shrimp scampi and cold fish salad, and plenty of fun. "They were always very gay, very animated, wonderfully boisterous times," said Ann LoPresti, his sister-in-law. In 1993, to everyone's surprise, Mr. Mazzella took to watercolors. Since then, he had done about 100 paintings of flowers, apples, sailboats, treehouses, even a bird cage and a top hat and cane. He framed the paintings and gave them to family members. His children, Susan and Michael have the most, 15 each. "It's almost like he had a need to leave a legacy," Ms. LoPresti said. "He didn't know, but that's how it's turned out." - submitted: 10/31/2001 11:53:29 PM

Jennifer and I graduated from St.Joseph's College in Brooklyn together. We were friends in college and when I started a job in the WTC, she was my "tour guide". She actually got me an interview at Cantor. I did not get the job at Cantor, and looking back, I am so glad that I didn't. Here we are almost a year later and not a day goes by where I do not think of Jennifer and the thousands of other people who woke up thinking it just an ordinary day. I just wanted to say that Jen was a beautiful person, heart and soul, and I consider lyself lucky to have had her as a friend. I hadn't spoken to her in months before 9-11, but oddly enough, as I went to bed on the night of 9-10, I thought of her and wanted to give her a call on Tuesday to catch up. We never know what life holds for us, so live each day as if it is your last. Jennifer, I hope to see you in Heaven someday.

When Kaaria Mbaya was a young boy in Kenya, he threw a stone at his housekeeper's cat, breaking its leg. He was so pained by what he had done that he walked nearly three miles, with the wounded cat in his arms, to a veterinary clinic that is part of the University of Nairobi. He got the cat admitted using the name of his mother, a biochemistry professor at the university. She was confounded when she received a medical bill for a cat. Mr. Mbaya's mother, Vertistine Mbaya, had looked forward to seeing her shy, compassionate son next summer, when he was to visit Kenya. He was raised there, where his father was a member of Kenya's first Parliament after the country became independent of British rule. His mother is American. At 38, he was a computer analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald in 1 World Trade, a job that suited him. It was informal. And Mr. Mbaya, who lived in Edison, N.J., did not like to dress up. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:04:28 PM

Brian was a great guy although i only met him once, he was one of my moms and dads friends. But from what i here he was a caring friend. On sept. 11th he went to work and never came back. He left a wife and five children. But from what I heard the only way he would have picked to die would be the way he did-saving people. His wife very upset and the children not understanding why there dad never came back that day want him back but know they cant get him. We all miss our love ones, but we do have to move on but still cry because you know you cant see them any more. Seeing my mom cry when she found out made me cry because of everything happening. Brian is now watching down on all of his friends and family. - submitted: 6/7/2002 7:52:15 PM

Whenever Brendan McCabe went out to business dinners, he ordered an extra dessert, took it home to his wife, Terri, and shared it with her. Some other images from Mr. McCabe's life: holding Jane, 10 months old, while walking around the house and calling her "my gorgeous, beautiful, wonderful girl," and playing baseball and football with his sons, ages 8, 6 and 4. When Mr. McCabe got home every evening from his job as a vice president at Franklin Templeton, the boys would stop what they were doing and run to Daddy. Jane would crawl to him, and he would scoop her up. On Sept. 10, Mr. McCabe, 40, took the day off and played in the pool with Connor, his youngest boy. Then he called for the older boys at school and bought them cleats for soccer. "Now my kids cry themselves to sleep," Mrs. McCabe said, "because they want their daddy. They say to me, Mom, remember Daddy did this with us, Daddy did that with us." - submitted: 10/31/2001 10:24:37 PM

I am a firefighter for the the City of Aurora, in Colorado. My department serves an immediate area of roughly 300,000 citizens, but we also serve the metropolitan area of Denver, CO as well.
Every year, 343 metro area Denver firefighters participate in a memorial stair climb on September 11th, to remember and honor our fallen FDNY brothers. Each firefighter climbs in honor of one of our fallen. Thomas J. McCann is the man I represent on these memorial stair climbs. The last few years, I have been trying to learn about FF McCann, but the things I have learned about him are marginal at best.
I know he was the father of two, having a son and daughter. I know he was married. Apparently he enjoyed playing golf, and was a pretty good cook.
I would really appreciate talking with anyone who could tell me about the man and firefighter he was. - submitted: 7/20/2009 12:01:13 PM

For two years I sat on the 95th floor on the west side of 1 Word Trade, just two floors down from Tonyell. Due to budget cuts, my contract ended on Friday, Sept. 7, 2001.
So I know it wasn`t a coincidence but only by the grace of God that I was not there September 11th. But I don`t want to talk about the tragedy or the fact that Tonyell may not physically be here tonight. I want to talk about how good GOD is and how Tonyell is one of those people who helped me tosee that.
For a long time I felt like I was unique: like people didn`t understand me, or didn`t want to take the time to doso. I wantedbadly to finally have a friend who too felt like she was unique and had her own flair, someone who wasn`t a conformist. One day that prayer was answered...
Because of my career I do a lot of traveling. But I have never been to Great Adventure. I was planning the trip with an associate who also sat on the 97th floor and "coincidentally" was an associate of Tonyell`s. All the time I worked for the company I had never met or seen Tonyell. Then oneday, Tonyell came downstairs to my cubical with her long corn-rolled hair, the cutest outfit ever, her beautiful jewelry, and her and I favorite - some of the hottest pair of heels.
The first thing out her mouth was, "Girl, how have you traveled all over the place and not go Great Adventure..." Right at that moment - I said to myself me and her are going to get along.
Tonyell and I began having lunch, shopping and planning trips together. She also started guiding me in establishing a relationship with God. I shared with her some of my fears and how I had not been to church in a very long time. She said to me in her sassy tone, "Your coming to church with me..."
I attended church with her and I thank her for helping me on my way. From that day forward, I began reading the Bible and going to church.
One day after September 11th,I opened my Bible and it opened to "Covenant Friendship",1 Samuel 20:16, 17(1st Samuel Chapter 20 Verse 16 and 17).
I only knew Tonyell for 6 months but in those 6 months we grew very attached. In comparison it may not have been as long as some others might have known her but it doesn`t take all day to recognize sunshine. So in closing I'd like to leave you with this:

Covenant Friendship
"...They know what you meanbefore you evensay it.If you have ever settledin to the rich lather ofa real covenant relationship, you are wealthy..."
I amtruly wealthy because Tonyell is in my life
"...Friendship is a sanctuary carved out ofthe jungle of a mad world, where so many people see each other as prey insteadof partners. These people never understand the powerand commitment of covenant friendship..."
"...If you already have a covenant friendship, savor your days together. If you don`t have such a friend, ask God, the Covenant-Maker, to send you a partner of the heart."
Tonyell and I met under the "weirdest" circumstances...but in my heart I know that it wasn`t weird...I know we were MEANT to be in each other lives.
I know God sent Tonyell to me and I to her.
Tonyell, I know you`re here - I know because I keep hearing the clicking of your stilettos (lol/smile). And I feel your spirit because you have shared part of your spirit with me."
I love you Tonyell and will miss you dearly - submitted: 12/27/2001 2:36:16 PM

Dear God I know you have welcomed this lovely young woman into your kingdom. She belongs to you now. The horrible way she died can not diminish her beauty. It is very sad to look as this young woman. She is so young and full of promise. Why did she have to die such a horrible death? You holy father are trying to tell us something. What it is I do not know. All I can say is you know what is best and in time you will reveal to us why the terrible event of September 11, 2001 had to happen. May the soul of lovely young woman rest in eternal peace. I remember one christmas I had spent with the family, Brian knew I felt funny but he did everything to make me feel right at home. When he went to arizona Kevin was so sad. Brian was going to Arizona to join the police force there and Kevin was going to join the fire dept. but Kevin never went and Brian ended up coming back to New York. Katie was a "bride" just starting her life in a number of ways. Although she did not work in the WTC and was only attending a conference on Sept. 11 she was no stranger to NYC. Kate enjoyed the city, Long Island , and much of upstate NY.... her true "home." She will be remembered for being the "baby" of the family, her "never say never" attitude (about EVERYTHING!) A Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,
Whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life,
Whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person
From the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling
And to give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor
And protect his property.

And if, according to my fate,
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting
My children and my wife.

Michael McHugh could have stayed in London. Cantor Fitzgerald had sent him there in January to open the firm's energy desk. It meant more - possibly a lot more - money and a new future, and his wife, Maria, was ready for it. But Mr. McHugh, 35, the sales director of Cantor's TradeSpark division, had sunk his roots too deep in Tuckahoe, a village in Westchester County. He started as an adjunct member of the village's planning board and quickly moved up to chairman. He loved the town because it was so pleasant and because of all the "normal, unpretentious people" who live there, Mrs. McHugh said. So in April, Mr. McHugh returned, to Maria and the three kids and the fixer-upper they had bought before they thought they could afford to live in Tuckahoe. Mr. McHugh came back so that his son Michael would not have to change soccer teams and so that he himself could run for the county board of legislators. Now his widow is running in his place in Tuesday's election. "I thought, `I really can't leave this hanging out,' " she said. "I have to finish it up. To complete a journey that we started." - submitted: 10/31/2001 10:27:13 PM

Bob was my friend. He drove the Peanut. He piled cans into wonderful works of art while sitting in the “FAT SEAT”. He enjoyed music (even the Ace of Base!) and Jeopardy. He thought he dominated the basketball court.
"When you were with Bob, you knew you were going laugh and have a great time.
He married a wonderful girl, Kate. He became a NYC firefighter. His memory lives on within me.

It has been four months, and I think of him every day. Every time I see the flag, or hear the news or think about my home, I think of Bob. I hear some music, and I think of Bob. I don't think any of us ever thought of each other as heroes, and Bob is probably laughing his ass off at being called one. But you are Boy Bobby, you make me proud to be your friend.
I miss you pal

It has taken me five months to write this. How do I sum up Bob's life into a few paragraphs? I can't. How do I explain how much I miss him and the impact he had on my life? I can't. The last time I saw Bob was at my 30 Birthday Party over the 4th of July weekend. My yard was full of red, white and blue decorations: flags, streamers, stars & striped beach balls, etc. I had invited all my friends for a BBQ and Bob was one of the first to arrive. Bob's laugh was heard over the crowd - laughing and joking around. He had a laugh that when you walked into a room full of people and heard it, you knew instantly, you were surrounded by friends. Bob left that day without saying "Goodbye." Which all his friends knew was a trademark of his. He was famous for just disappearing at the end of the night without saying goodbye. On September 11th, Bob left us all without saying goodbye. He lost his life that day saving others. This is yet another trademark of his. He was always there to help, and you never had to ask. Bob, I thank you for the many years of friendship! Thank you for all the great memories, the fun and the laughs. This is not goodbye, you will always be alive in all our hearts and minds! I can still hear your laughter ringing in my ears and it makes me smile. We all love you and we all miss you! Rosemary Weppler (Spot & Roe) - submitted: 2/12/2002 11:36:43 AM

Strong women they make in Diarelia Mena's family: matriarchs, and lots of them, too - six sisters in Diarelia's mother's generation. And who can count all the cousins between here and Panama City who keep in touch through a sprawling e- mail group? Diarelia Mena was the youngest, the baby, the much fussed-over little princess, and didn't she know it, with her winning smile, her spontaneous three-day jaunts to the Bahamas? She became a mother herself - her daughter, Karelia, is 2 - and she married the toddler's father, Victor Barahona, whom she had known from her childhood visits to Panama from Brooklyn. But like other mothers in her family, Ms. Mena, 30, worked hard outside the home, too: she was a computer programmer at Cantor Fitzgerald, regularly arriving there around 10 a.m., after household chores were done, and staying late. On Sept. 11, she showed up before 9 a.m. so she could leave early, to begin graduate courses at Columbia. She needed to make more money for, among other life necessities, shoes. Ms. Mena was a tall woman who craved stiletto heels, wedges, sandals, boots; the more the better, the higher the better yet. Now see her as her mother remembers her: after midnight on Christmas Eve, visiting family in Panama City, her long hair loose as she moves from house to house, nibbling tamales, dancing the merengue until sunrise, swaying confidently on those towering shoes. - submitted: 10/31/2001 11:46:49 PM

While growing up in the Bronx, Steve Mercado wanted to play for the Yankees. And even though he ended up becoming a firefighter, he did not exactly leave his boyhood dream behind. He played softball with other firefighters. He presided over a stickball league. And he was helping to create a baseball and stickball league for children under 9. "He had his fingers in everything," said his mother, Mary Mercado. "Every time someone calls I say, `I didn't know that.' " But Mr. Mercado, 38, who remained in the Bronx with his wife and two sons, also loved being a firefighter, his mother said. He is now one of 11 firefighters missing from Engine 40, Ladder 35 in Manhattan. His parents, who live in Florida, visited the firehouse recently and were greeted with hugs and kisses from firefighters and strangers alike. "They cry with us," Mrs. Mercado said of the strangers dropping off flowers, food and money at the firehouse. "New York City has been great. They feel the pain." But none more than her son's Fire Department brothers, she said. "The firemen are the ones that are hurting," Mrs. Mercado said. "They say they have to have hope." That is why she still spoke of the oldest of her three sons in the present tense. "I'm very proud of him," she said. "He's a great son." - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:38:36 PM

This man was a credit to the black race and played a major role in helping many black young people get through college. He did everything in his power to help us work and go to school. He was a man of faith in God and demonstrated incredible kindness to those with difficult situations. Yamel Merino had a soft, sweet voice and a gentle smile, yet she could be as strong as a bull. She had to lift heavy patients onto gurneys in her job as an emergency medical technician. She knew her job was dangerous. Every night, she prayed for God to protect her 8-year-old son, whom she was raising on her own. She felt most fulfilled when she was helping people. She was one of the first people to reach the trade center complex before the first building collapsed. The 24-year-old mother lived with her son in Yonkers. Her big goal was to return to school to become a nurse. She had struggled mightily to get where she was. She didn't finish high school, though she eventually got her general equivalency diploma. She had worked at Metrocare, an ambulance company, for more than three years. A close friend recalls she had been nervous about whether she would get the job. She need not have worried. "They loved her," said the friend, Maureen Niciu. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:29:48 PM

I had the opportunity to double date with Jill for a friends sake at 16 years old… I lived in her town and always watched what she did, so beautiful, and for me so tall...lol I'm 5'7 and she was a tall beauty... We double dated that night and although I was uncomfortable, she was such a good person, you felt at ease almost instantly. When I heard the news, I work at an airline in Florida, I was devastated. I saw her picture for the first time since 9th grade....Just as vibrant and beautiful as ever… I hope you're looking down and laughing at that short guy like you did that night .....you are life, love and happiness all wrapped in a wonderful package, prayers for all who mourn your tragic passing Jill…

Nicole was working her way through West Valley College in nearby Saratoga as a waitress. A sophomore on the dean's list, she was trying to decide between majoring in business or communications and what 4-year college to attend. She had joined her boyfriend, Ryan Brown, in New York after he called her while visiting his relatives and said he missed her. When it was time to fly home, the Los Angeles Times reported, she tried to get a ticket on his return flight but couldn't. Instead, she boarded Flight 93 after kissing Brown at the gate. Nicole was an outdoors and exercise buff, played softball in high school and later taught body-sculpting classes to IBM workers. - submitted: 10/19/2001 5:17:13 PM

I had just stumbled upon Nicole's memorial page and was touched to tears from the loss of suched a loved person. I am Nicole's age and am also a college student. I never knew Nicole but do know the pain my family and fiance would go through if they had lost me. My heart and prayers go out to her family, may Nicole watch over everyday and every night. - submitted: 12/13/2001 1:22:12 PM

I knew Nicole through her boyfriend, Ryan Brown. I wasnt a close friend, but I was touched by her beautiful smile and her warm heart everytime I saw her. She had a certain glow about her... that she couldnt hide even if she wanted to. My prayers and thoughts are always with her, Ryan and her family. I will NEVER forget Nicole or that horrible day.

Your guys from Lad 105 and Eng 219 did a great job honoring you at your service on 10/10/09 at Pinelawn. Since we never found you, we buried your hat and an urn with WTC ashes. We saw the Drill video you made on Aug.04,2001. The young guys watched to learn, the senior guys watched to reminise and laugh about the man they knew, miss and loved.

Recently I was given the opportunity to attend firefighters funerals in New York for my 16th birthday. We live in Spring Hill, Florida and my father is a firefighter here in Tampa. He presented me with the option as opposed to going to disney world and I jumped at the chance. The firefighter's memorial we went to was Mr. Mitchell's. I have never been so touched by one person's life than in the few hours I spent hearing about him. The people who knew him well called him "Big Daddy" and there wasn't a job he would back out of. He seemed to help everybody. He made an impact on everything he did, a true perfectionist, he did everything the best it could be done. I didn't even know there were people in this world like him, but now that I do, I feel a sense of pride. I'm proud just to be a citizen in the same country as he was. I wish I could have met him, but even better, I'll tell his story to everyone who asks and even some who don't. Thank you Mr. Mitchell Sincerally, Katie McCabe - submitted: 12/5/2001 2:32:31 PM

You were a man who always listened regardless of what was being told to you then ask, do you want my advise? I truly miss that! I find myself now saying those same words to your grandchildren. It is because of you that I am the woman I am today so thanks Dad for I owe it all to you. When the time comes that I part from this world and get to see you again make sure you put on a pot of coffee cause I have so much to tell you about, but till that day comes you will forever be alive in my heart ❤️ - submitted: 4/12/2018 3:10:41 PM

I can't explain how much I miss you, even though I was 11 the last time I saw you. It is incredible how hard this has hit me, and I will forever be close to your family. I remember it like it was yesterday that you took me and Joe to PS 32 to teach us how to play basketball to be like the "big kids". There are so many memories, and I am just glad to remember them. Joe and I will always be best friends and your selflessness and courage will never be forgotten. 9.11.01 - submitted: 9/11/2008 5:47:15 AM

Dennis I remember dancing salsa with you at all of our late friend's Lydia Canales' (may she RIP) parties in Throggs Neck and at the Puerto Rican Day Parade after-parties with the Policeman and the Fireman. You were a phenominal dancer. You had a free spirit and a wonderful smile. I was only a teenager than and now I am 38 years old with children. Although we lost touch, I felt like I knew you for a very long time. I thought of you often throughout the years and thought of you immediately in the wake of such a tragic event on September 11th. My brother, who is a detective, confirmed your passing to me and I was heartbroken. You were a star that shined so brightly every time I saw you. I may be babbling but I just wanted you and all those that read this to know that your life was not taken in vain. You served us well Dennis. You did your job and you did it well. Your memory will live on forever. We love you Dennis. My family and I will never forget you. - submitted: 7/25/2002 8:13:58 AM

Michael Montesi was nuts about machines.

As a young volunteer fireman in New Hyde Park, he competed with the championship Termites racing team and poured his heart and wallet into a series of red Camaros.

"He used to clean the air vents with a Q-tip," lifelong friend Richard Husch remembered with a laugh. "He was a detail freak - everything was precision."

That perfectionism led the 13-year firefighter through a series of Manhattan engine and ladder companies to the elite Rescue 1, where Montesi thrived on the technical challenges of torches, steel cutters and other specialized tools.

He was so happy as a rescue firefighter that he just giggled when the two friends talked about an upcoming lieutenant's test.

"He said, 'I am really enjoying what I'm doing now,'" Husch remembered. "He had no intention of retiring - he lived and breathed Rescue 1."

Montesi's remains were found Sept. 29 in the World Trade Center's north tower, on the same day as a memorial service in Highland Mills, N.Y., where the 39-year-old firefighter lived with his wife, Nancy, and their sons, Matthew, 7, Ian, 5, and Ryan, 3.

Those who eulogized Montesi that day all remembered his striving for excellence and the way that lifted and energized those around him.

"When you were with Mike, you knew you were a) safe, b) doing things the right way and c) going to have the expected outcome," said Husch, now a Nassau police paramedic, for whom that quality got him through a crisis in 1990 when he was Montesi's volunteer captain.

Husch had been badly burned on his back, arm and shoulder during a training accident, and had undergone a painful yearlong recovery. When they went back to train at the burn building the next year, "I was fearful. I didn't want to go in."

Montesi prodded his friend gently with a few unprintable words. "He said, 'What are you going to do, stand out here ... all day? Come on, let's go.'"

"And I went, because I trusted him." - Elizabeth Moore - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:54:42 PM

Martin Morales moved from a small Mexican village to New York City three years ago, seeking the storybook American life. Living in a cramped basement apartment with a half-dozen relatives in Elmhurst, Queens, he scoured Spanish-speaking newspapers for jobs, working here and there until about a year ago, when he landed a job as an assistant chef at Windows on the World, said his brother, Gonzalo Morales. The picturesque views of Lady Liberty and Governors Island allowed Martin Morales, 22, to reflect daily on the mission ahead of him. He wanted to learn English and earn enough money to build a house in the countryside back home, his brother said. His 9-year-old niece, Diana Narvaiz, said she will miss playing soccer with her uncle and his sense of humor. "He would always say he was going to Mexico," she said. At a Giants playoff game last year, George Morell introduced himself to the legendary halfback Frank Gifford, without knowing who he was. Even when Mr. Gifford said his own name, Mr. Morell still did not know. When his friends ribbed him, Mr. Morell replied, "Well, he didn't know who I was either." Mr. Morell, 47, a bond broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, was the kind of man who shook hands with strangers and made them his friends. It did not matter if they were celebrities or not. "George made the shoeshine guy feel like a million bucks," said his younger brother, Mark. "He didn't collect cars or postage stamps. He collected friends." The elder Mr. Morell lived with his wife, Roberta, and their children, Nancy, George Jr., Kelsey and Harrison, in Bedford, N.Y. He liked to hunt and fish, and often took his family along. But his favorite pastime was telling stories about his encounters with life. He always had just one more to tell. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:20:53 PM

9/20/01
George Morrell and I first met when I was five years old, and our Dads began our competitive swimming careers, entering us in the bubble-race. Boys our age swam 25 yards with a bubble of some sort to keep us afloat. My swimming career lasted eleven years but was not particularly successful. I made a few friends and learned some things and yet, I was not a well-gifted athlete, as were my sister and brother and George. I was just the third leg of a relay race. I was a little fellow the coach was glad to have around, but not the one whose name sprang quickly to mind for any important occasion.
Swimming against me that day 43 years ago was another five-year old, George Morrell. He beat me that day and I was second. There might have been but two bubble boys that day. I just know I was second. And that George Morrell won.
That was the way things were to go with George and me for many years. First and Second. He always First and I always Second.
Still, you could not dislike George. Nor did I ever. He had a magical kindness about him. He would never let me beat him in a race. Nonetheless, had it ever happened, George would have been the same gentleman as he was as a winner.
I always won at breaststroke – by large distances. We were close at backstroke. Butterfly and freestyle were, however, non-competitive. He tore apart the water and I never had a chance.
In our last race against each other, when we were 16, we raced the individual medley. All the strokes combined. Breaststroke was the next to last and, shockingly, I had kept close and in the breaststroke leg pulled ahead of George. Well ahead. I wanted to win and swam for all I could. To this day I can feel the aches and agony of the race that day I swam.
I might as well have stayed home because George had me so well in freestyle and he motored. He had no intent to lose to me. While it did end close, as when we were five, George won.
At the age of eight, George and I took an examination to get into the same school. Iona Grammar School. I can see his smiling face as I write today. We were both nervous. At least, I know I was. Still George looked at me as I turned to look at him. He waved his arm to me and thereby told me that I would do well. I vaguely recall he said exactly that earlier in the day. How kind a gesture that was for a little boy of eight.
We both got into Iona and for the next five years shared our days in the winter (as well as my swimming losses in the summer). In school, it was quite a bit different. I did get the grades that he did not. Normally, we shared the back left corner of the class with James L. and Costas L. If they did not know the answers, they turned to me. George certainly and often.
I made other friends, as did George. We did not drift apart from each other. We were the same as we had always been. Caring but not tied.
In the same summer as our final race, George and Chuck H. and Vance C. and I competed in a relay that was never to be raced again, since the pool in which it took place was soon demolished and the distance (which now escapes me) was unusual. All of us swam freestyle. I bet I was third in the relay…the useless guy. We swam against all the significant teams in Westchester. We set a new record – by far shattering the old one.
Many years later, I mentioned this to George at a dinner we both attended. He seemed so pleased to know that one of his records stood. Would, in fact, forever remain untouched and untouchable.
Aside from my family, George was probably the longest lasting continuous person in my life. At the beginning of this summer, I called him to recommend a friend for employment. Of course, he not only took the call but kept me on the telephone talking about the day we had set the record. George never discussed with me the days that he had left me far behind him.
George was that kind of person. His life, viewed from my perspective, always had the pretty girls and the gold medals and the lucky touch.
One time, George told me that he came back from Florida, where he had been a carpenter. He was without a job or significant prospects and he went for an interview that went poorly. Feeling less than perfect, as he told the story, he looked that way on the elevator. A fellow asked him if he was passable. George asked this man to join him in a beer. With the last ten dollars in his pocket, George bought the beers.
Next thing you know, George had a job at Cantor & Fitzgerald. Just like George. You could not help but love him.
Until that Tuesday, that is where he worked. In the World Trade Center. I have been told he is missing.
As I watched the Towers drift away into a yellow cloud of horror, drifting slowly and large to the Atlantic Ocean, I did not know George might be in that death’s wreath of smoke and that he would come to rest, finally, in water … wherein we had long ago first met.
I do not know how many died in the World Trade Center. Many. How many George Morrells? I cannot know or guess. I just know that madness occurred when one George was removed from this Earth. George solved no insolvable problems, received no Nobel Prizes, wrote no enduring novels.
He made, however, the planet a better place. There are no medals for that accomplishment. Still, what more could you ask? I hope that they find George, alive and well. I now know they will not. But if they do not, I can only wish that the murderers might one day understand that they did not do anything more than take George from those who loved him. And from an Earth that needs more George Morrell.

It will soon be one year since my husband was so visciously murdered while going about his business at Marsh McLennan in the World Trade Center. I can still feel the panic as I watched the buildings collapse. What a waste. I will now go through my life without the most wonderful part of me. I will see the horrific, confused look in my childrens eyes, whenever the realization of what happened to their father hits them…this happens so many times a day as well as waking us from our sleep during the night. This emptiness is sure to be expected when a man like Steve Morello is ripped from your arms. His talents, which I took for granted, such as singing love songs and playing his guitar in the evening before we went to bed. How patiently he was teaching me the map of the world and the places we would visit when we were on our own. He wrote beautiful poetry to his children. All these contributions and so much more. But for me….his eyes, wonderful green eyes. I adored this man for 33 years. We celebrated our 33rd anniversary on 8/31/2001. I am so grateful we did celebrate.

We have three wonderful successful children and a beautiful grandson "Presley"

Our lives have been destroyed. For me…I just don't know where to start. If you knew Steve Morello, you would understand what I'm trying to say.

I pray that God blesses all of us,

Eileen Morello

It still seems so unbelievable. To scroll down all these names of those murdered that terrible day, and then to find my own daddy's name. The heartache and madness reaches to the pit of my being, I am just so sad. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of you, and remember what an amazing man I have as a father. As I read more and more about the events leading up to that terrible day, I am sickened. These people murdered my father and so many other people's fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, and brothers and sisters. I'm sorry Daddy and I hope you know how much we all love you, and miss you... Yvette Nicole Moreno, 24, was a gawky junior high school student when she was paired with a Big Sister, who volunteered to take her on outings to the beach, the ballet or the mall. The match was perfect. Joanne Alicea, 41, had also grown up in a single-parent home, went to Roman Catholic schools and lived in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. For four years, the two saw each other at least every other weekend. They got to know each other's friends and family. And long after the formal relationship was over, they stayed in touch. Over the summer, Ms. Alicea joined Ms. Moreno and her mother for dinner at Cabana, at the South Street Seaport. Ms. Moreno was bubbling with news. She was working as a receptionist at Carr Futures, in the World Trade Center, and finishing college part time. She was dressed like the successful professional she was becoming, made-up and manicured. She was thinking about buying a car. "She was doing everything she set out to do," Ms. Alicea said. After the trade center attack, Ms. Alicea visited her friend's mother with condolences. There was a shiny Mitsubishi outside, so new it still had temporary plates and that leathery smell. Ms. Moreno's 21- year-old brother was desperately, hopefully, polishing the chrome. - submitted: 10/31/2001 10:53:38 PM

To my dear sweet friend,

Not a day goes by when I don't think about you...not a single day.

The Seasons of Time…
- Jeannine Torres

22 years ago you came into my life…and you became one of my closest and dearest friends.
You became like my little sister…

And that’s when the seasons changed…

Just the other day we played, we smiled, and we shared so many wonderful moments together.

Just the other day we jumped into the pool with our swimmies…and we swam until we turned into prunes.

Just the other day you laid on my bed…and we laughed until it hurt so much, we could laugh no more.

Just the other day you sat next to me at my birthday party and helped me blow out all the candles…like only a special friend could do.

Just the other day we had a fashion show… and then we sang and we danced on the beds like we were superstars.

Just the other day we made plans to have dinner soon…and to talk about all of our favorite things.

But then yesterday…time stood still.

And that’s when the seasons changed…
Yesterday we had a moment of remembrance…
And the tragic silence of the world was so loud that it pierced through my soul.

Yesterday I wished I could trade places with you…so I would not feel so much pain and sorrow.

Yesterday we lit candles in your honor…and sent 22 of them floating down the river.

Yesterday I needed to hear you…so I dialed your phone to be comforted by the warmth in your voice.

Yesterday I was angry because I was not ready to let go of you…not ready to say goodbye.

Yesterday my world changed in an instant… altering my life in so many ways.

Yesterday God showed us that we must live for today…

And that’s when the seasons changed…

Today I know that God will take us all into His arms and His garden of love…you just got to go sooner than expected.

Today…I am grateful to have had you in my life…for you have touched and shaped my world like only a true friend could have done.

Today I miss you more than ever, but I would rather look back knowing that I have been blessed with 22 beautiful years than to have had nothing at all.

Today I know you’re in a place more beautiful than we could ever imagine…a place so magical it’s surrounded by angels.

Today it is because of you that people around the world are united and holding hands like they never have before.

Today I know by the look in their eyes, your family needs me to help mend their hearts and wipe away their tears.

So today…I asked God for strength…

And that’s when the seasons changed…

Tomorrow I make you a promise, a promise to look after your family.

Tomorrow I shall bring a smile to their faces once again and warm their souls…with wonderful moments shared and beautiful memories held inside their hearts.

Tomorrow I shall never forget the joy and happiness you brought to my life and to everyone around you.

And tomorrow…you will be remembered as you were… beautiful…both inside and out.

Tomorrow as I go to work and walk to the pier, I shall bring you a flower and say a prayer.

And tomorrow…as I look across the water to where God took you into His arms…
I shall bow my head and whisper…

Until we meet again my dear sweet friend…until we meet again…

And that’s when the seasons shall change… - submitted: 9/9/2004 4:14:14 PM

Mr. Moskal was my neighbor. He always cut his lawn and tended to the flowers in the yard. He was always outside. I saw Mr. Moskal the week before he died in his yard when we were going to our block party for our development. Our neighborhood had a beautiful candle light ceremony in front of his house when he was missing. We prayed for his safe return. Now, we have a memorial plaque and flagpole in Mr. Moskal’s honor in front of the neighborhood. We had a dedication ceremony for the memorial. Every year on 9/11 people leave flowers at it. This year the flag was at half mast and many neighbors left flowers. We miss Mr. Moskal. - submitted: 9/14/2011 3:20:16 PM

I stumbled across this memorial, and felt drawn to your name...years have passed since we last spoke..and althoughttime caused a distance between us, I fondly rememeber all the good times we once had when we were friends. i recalled one time in particular...it was you and I, and John Tierney, and some others, and we were in my yard and swimming, and then later out side in the neighborhood sneaking cigerettes and riding bikes. And every time i have that memory...I come back to reality, and realize you and John are gone..and wonder how that could be...when the memory still feels fresh, like it happend yesterday. I just wanted to write this, and memorialize you. I am grateful I knew you Chris, and hope that the years that passed that went by with out us speaking were good ones for you...God bless you...and your family! - submitted: 8/16/2003 8:02:19 AM

I knew Dennis thru a friend of mine. We were NYC teachers and Dennis came to our classrooms and gave presentations on his equipment and gave the children tips on what to do in an emergency. He did this free of charge. He did it as afavor to his frien Kathie Maurer. He also volunteered his free time to accopmany us on class trips to the Bronx Zoo. He never seemed to look at at as as favor, but as a good time. I will always remember him with 3or 4 kids jumping on his back and him laughing and really bonding with those kids! This is what kills me about September 11th. So many good souls like Dennis will go unknown. But I remember him. And I will always pray for him. Till the day that I die. God Bless You Dennis! After growing up in Ridgewood, N.J., with four older sisters, Charlie Murphy somehow emerged as transcendently normal. "We wanted to move to the suburbs," said Lyna Huie, his fiancée, who worked with him at Cantor Fitzgerald. "He wanted a big porch. A deck in the back with a pool and a fireplace were necessities." He was "relentlessly funny," said one sister, Nancy. He ruled the family's holiday Trivial Pursuit games. "He'd insult you and you'd be laughing so hard you didn't care," she said. At 36, he was finally making some money, which he spent on presents. "He was absurdly generous," Nancy said. "He'd come at Christmas with the car loaded with gifts. He'd bring bags and bags of steaks and salmon to family parties. He'd do all the cooking and all the cleaning and if you tried to thank him, he'd insult you and make you laugh." - submitted: 10/18/2001 9:53:37 PM

I grew up with Chuck and haven't seen him since we graduated high school in 1981. We formed a bond early in grammar school--a bond that will always be special to me. Even though we walked different paths in HS, when we did meet up, the foundation we had formed earlier allowed us not to miss a stride. He was a great athlete, he was my protector in sixth grade, he was a source of endless laughs. He was Chuck Murphy and I'm very sad that he's gone. - submitted: 2/11/2002 9:02:22 AM

If ever there was someone that everyone gravitated towards it would have been"Murph". Although we lost him in body, I'm sure that all would agree that the years spent knowing him and playing sports and social events with him have left an indullable mark on my memory and everyone he met. From the moment I met Murph we had a Cat and Mouse relationship…. He would say something just to get me to chase him knowing full well that the chances were slim-to-none that I would catch him. After hearing the news of the days events 09/01/01 my mind started going through the list of people I grew up with that may have been immediately in jeopardy, I started calling from Florida to see if all were safe. My initial "lawns" crew was safe and now my mind started on other classmates who might have been there. It was days later when a friend told me that Murph was amoung those missing. My heart sank….. Out of all the people I knew in Ridgewood, his was the first one to pop into my mind. I guess the strangest thing about it is that although I'd see Murph at the Elks Club on the Fouth of July when I'd get a chance to get back home to visit, work was not something we'd talk about and I had no reason to put him in NYC that day. I knew he went to Syracuse, but I did not know for what. I guess even after all these years of being away… from Ridgewood and school, he was etched in my mind and will remain in my heart forever. Now you know the worst we humans have to know about ourselves, and I am sorry, for I know that you will be afraid. To those of our bodies given without pity to be burned, I know there is no answer but loving one another, even our enemies, and this is hard. But remember:when a man of war becomes a man of peace, he gives a light, divine though it is also human. When a man of peace is killed by a man of war,he gives a light. You do not have to walk in darkness. If you will have the courage for love, you may walk in light. It will be the light of those who have suffered for peace. It will be your light.(Lisa from IBJ) - submitted: 9/11/2003 8:24:12 AM
