And I attended CardinalSpellman as well. My crowd and I used to look up to you when we all hung out in Van Cortlandt Park. You were so athletic, and honestly, the most gorgeous guy--with that mustache and all that hair! I had such a crush on you! I was horrified to hear of your loss on that tragic day. O, I love you, always did always will. Your last summer was one of my best summers. Thank you for sharing your skills, your love and your kindness to me and all of our kids. I'm getting a tatoo in your honor. You'll remember when you see it what it means!! My heart is still broken that you are not here. But I'm trying. This was my first step. You were a tough one to loose. I'm wearing the sweatshirt you got me after you and Debbie bought the house and I came to help you guys clean up! Remember that, what a friggin disaster! I cried enough tonight for 5 people. I miss you sooo much. Thank you for all that you added to my life. I hope I added to your life in some way too. I love you Brother.... It's been so long, Orio, since the day you were lost. I still think of you all the time. I carry your mass card in my bell cap and have prayed for your assistance and intervention in trying times. This week we lost two firefighters in Connecticut and as always when a firefighter dies in the line of duty, I think of you. I'll see Debbie and the kids soon at the reunion...I see your strength in them. So glad and honored that I got to meet you and hang with you on the too-few occasions that I did. I talked about you to a new firefighter on my engine today...told him of your accomplishments...he looked you up and was amazed.
Thanks, again, Orio. Wish we could have a beer and laugh about the job again.
Love ya.

Frank A. Palombo   46 Brooklyn, NY United States
World Trade Center - firefighter , New York Fire Department - submitted: 10/3/2001 8:39:31 AM

When friends teased Frank Palombo about fathering 10 children, he would reply with a grin, "I want more." Palombo, a deeply religious man, attended Cathedral Prep Seminary in Elmhurst, Queens, and was contemplating the priesthood, but he was too much in love with his friend Raymond's kid sister, Jean Marie Courtien, whom he had known as a child. The couple wed and settled in Brooklyn to raise a family while Palombo began a career with the New York Fire Department. Though he loved his job, he was looking forward to retiring, said his wife's sister, Shelly Hogan of Brookville. Palombo, 46 and due to retire in January, was among six firefighters from Brooklyn Battalion 57 reported missing while rescuing survivors from the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Skilled with his hands, the Brooklyn-born firefighter was always making things for his home in Brooklyn's Park Slope section, Hogan said. He loved to cook for his family and to take his eight sons and two daughters to nearby Prospect Park to play football and other games. "He was always happy and always had children hanging from him," Hogan said. "He had a big heart." Jean Marie Palombo and her children are finding solace by praying together every night, her sister said. The youngest child, Margaret Mary, will have her first birthday in eight days. The others are Anthony, 15, Frank Jr., 14, Joseph, 12, Maria, 11, Thomas, 9, John, 8, Patrick, 6, Daniel, 4, and Steven, 2. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:52:52 PM

They say memories are golden,
well maybe that is true,
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted YOU.

A million times I`ve needed YOU,
A million tears I`ve cried,

If LOVE alone could have saved YOU,
You would have never died.

In life I loved YOU dearly,
In death I LOVE YOU still,

In my heart you hold a place,
No one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I `d walk the path to heaven
And bring you back again.

Our loving chain was broken,
and nothing is the same,
but God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again"

GOD KNOWS HOW MUCH
I LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS
WILL. - submitted: 7/29/2004 4:38:52 PM

At first, the personnel director at Marsh & McLennan thought Michael Parkes had - to put it gently - embellished his job application. A scoutmaster? A leader of a church youth group? A volunteer camp counselor? A member of the church managing committee? Please. "They said, `You don't have to say these things to get a job here,' " said Stanley Edme, a friend who roomed with him at New York University. " `We're going to check these things out, you know.' " Turned out that Mr. Parkes, 27, was telling the truth. He worked as an accountant, but his goal was to help young people on a grand scale - to guide young black men into top colleges and corporations and teach them true friendship. Among his friends, he was the diplomat, the mediator. "When you talked to him," Mr. Edme said, "you felt stronger and taller. He'd have been a great politician." But his heart was with the Episcopal Church, said his twin sister, Monique. "We thought he'd be a bishop," she said, "and go home to Jamaica and build a school." Already, she said, they were making plans. - submitted: 10/31/2001 9:53:16 PM

Hasmukh Parmar had a smile to cast away darkness, and that is what his wife, Bharti Parmar, misses the most these days. She can see that smile when she recalls the Friday before the twin towers fell, when the couple went on a nighttime cruise around Manhattan. It was like a second honeymoon, with the city as a wedding gift of a jeweled skyline, the September breezes like soft brush strokes. The following Tuesday morning, Mr. Parmar, 48, the father of two boys, was back at his job on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center. He was kept busy as a computer systems manager for Cantor Fitzgerald but always found time to chat with friends or lavish attention on his sons. "He was everything to us," Mrs. Parmar said. "Everything." At his 14-year-old son's school, Mr. Parmar was a basketball coach. Guitar was the special bond between Mr. Parmar and his 16-year-old. The father taught the son to play, amusing him with the songs of Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. They played together every night when Mr. Parmar came home from work. - submitted: 10/31/2001 11:25:20 PM

Today, on May 30, while the city was marking the end of excavation at Ground Zero, I thought of Avnish. Like so many others, I felt an affection for Avnish even though I met him just once or twice... I can clearly recall, years later, going out with mutual friends to get drinks at a club, having shots, and having a great time. His energy and sense of humor were indescribable, and I remember saying to our shared friend, "Where did you meet this guy? He's hilarious!!" Today, I saw his still-active website and almost came to tears at work. I wish I had known Avnish better during his time here... I'm not sure how many people exist who can make such a quick, positive impact on others.

Avnish was truly an angel in disguise. Not only was he one of my closest friends, but like an older brother. I remember how he was so passionate, not just about books, Buffy, the Simpsons, and regae music, but passionate about life itself. He would smile so big, I could see him from all the way from Cali! Though I only knew him for 4 years, we shared a lifetime of memories. My prayers go out to Avnish every night. He lives on, inside me. - Naina Sindher - submitted: 7/22/2002 9:06:18 PM

I worked with Avnish for a short time in the late 1990s at First Manhattan Consulting Group. It so happens I assisted him in scanning the beautiful photos of New Zealand that still grace his website.

He was beautiful, intelligent, charming, and very dedicated. I worked in the Production center, always abuzz, and when he dragged himself away from his desk to come and drop off some work, he always looked bit startled by our frantic pace and raucous rock and roll on the radio. He was a favorite among us for his good manners and sweet nature. I will always remember his humor, and his brilliant smile.

It is my most heartfelt prayer that when the terrible moment came, Avnish knew he was not alone, and that he did not suffer. He will not be forgotten.

I have updated my poetry website, including new work in recognition of the events of 9/11/01. When it comes to dealing with the life of the emotions, I don't know what else to do but write. Hopefully something of what I have to say will resonate with you.

Patrice, you wrote in my yearbook, remember the way we met - at that dance when we discovered who are parents were? Pretty funny. I can't remember. Perhaps you can send me a signal. And then we shared a locker in gym class. That was 1967 at Pascack Valley. What I remember from gym class was getting locked in the locker room. Now that was funny.
We had a wonderful reunion this year (perhaps you know)and we missed you.

Patrice, Every year on 9/11 I present a reading in your honor to all the students at Flint Hill School, the high school where I teach science. This year, I dug out the 1966 yearbook and saw your wonderful smile. You had circled your face on the Smoke Signal page, and wrote me "Thanks for your sagacious leadership." No one ever uses that word in a yearbook entry, but you did! I think of you often, and though we did not keep up, I miss you very much. Know that each year I explain who you were and how important you are to me, and I read from John Donne "for whom the bell tolls" in your memory. I send my warmest wishes and memories to Deen and Dan and your husband. Fred Chanania PVHS Class of '66. - submitted: 9/12/2005 6:36:17 PM

Durrell Pearsall (Bronco as we all knew him) was a dear friend of my husband, Frank, and I. We met him years ago at the gym we both worked at and that Bronc trained at. Less then one year before the events of 9/11, Bronco gave me the ultimate wedding present secrectly planning, along with my husband, to have he and some band mates play at our wedding. He was an amazing person, always a story, always a warm smile and a big ear, always a song. We will never forget all he did for us and for everyone who had the extreme pleasure of simply knowing him. You have touched so many people's lives, however the way you touched Karen (girlfriend)is something that I do not have words for. She loved you like no other, you were her best friend, you made her laugh like no one could but most of all she was so proud of what you stood for, to be the best NY firefighter. Dear Bronko,
My brother John read a beautiful speech about you a few weeks ago at Town Hall. He wrote those words from deep within his broken heart. He told of knowing you before being firemen, when you guys were very young…very big, but very young. Knowing you from a child to a man and being both in FDNY. No one could ever ask for a better friend than you. You and John complemented each other and I know how much you both cared for each other. Karen too is such a very special beautiful woman, and I know her heart is deeply broken. You loved her very much, as she loved you too. A perfect pair. We all were touched by you and your beautiful character, always smiling, funny and charming. Very intense. The parties at Oceanside many, many years ago before Johnny moved in with you…the parties in Hempstead when Johnny moved in with you….always smiling, always kind. You will never, ever be forgotten and are in our hearts and thoughts always. Such a beautiful tribute to you on the NFL Films "The Bravest Club", and every picture you have such a beautiful smile…larger than the sun.

When I look up at the sky at night and see a very bright, shining star, I smile and say "Hi Bronko".

May God Bless You Always.

Dearest Brother,
As the first anniversary approaches I still can not believe the huge whole in our lifes since you have been gone. For me I am still living that horrible day and to think next week it will be a year you have been gone. There is not a day that goes by that you are not talked about, thought of or tears of sorrow run down our faces. You were the star in our family and with 5 points to every star, our family star is now missing since you have been gone. The pain we are all feeling is something we cant even put in words. I love you so much my little brother may you rest in peace. Until we meet again I love you always.

I first met Anthony, Mary and the kids when they moved in across the street from me in Locust Valley. Anthony and I quickly became great friends since we shared many of the same interests like computers and hockey. My best memories of Anthony are of what a great father he was. He would dress up in costume for the kids's (Olivia, Anthony James, and Alexis) birthday parties. One year he dressed up as Darth Vader and along with his brother, Scott (dressed as a Jedi Knight) they staged a light sabre battle to entertain the kids. Anthony James was given his own light sabre to help defeat the evil Darth Vader. Before "Darth" went down for the final time he reached out to Anthony James and said (in his best James Earl Jones voice), "Noooo Anthony James, I am your Father..." I don't think I have ever laughed that hard since. My own career brought me to Florida but Anthony and I still kept in touch by phone and email. We still joked and carried on like we did before. One time he left me a voice mail to tease me about something, it was very funny and I kept to message to listen to when I needed to hear a friendly voice. Now that message has become its own memorial to my best friend's memories. Anthony, Tami and I miss you very much! - submitted: 11/20/2001 8:41:01 AM

My name is Fanny, and I just wanted to pay my respects to Nancy Perez. She lived in the house right next to me. We never really spoke, we really didn't have much to speak about. She being 36 years of age and I only being 18. We must of said hi and bye at the most. The day of September 11th, I arrived home to find her mother at her steps in tears. I figured she was hurting as much as we were. But her pain was deaper. Not until that day did I learn that Nancy Perez worked in one of the towers. It's funny how you can know someone, see them everyday, and not even realize that you know nothing about them. I would have never thought that such a tragedy could have struck someone that I knew. I had mixed feelings. I wanted to be strong for the mother, and father, but at the same time I wanted to cry. I could not bear to see her family in so much pain. The Perez family has little by little learned to cope with this tragedy, and have learned to accept the idea of what happened.
I know that Nancy Perez will never be forgotten by her family nor by my family.

I did not know anyone that died, but I know some people that almost died, but weren't even there. I learned of John Perry last night on the tv, watching the channel 7 show on this tragic day. All I really have to say is that whoever is related to John, you must be as brave as him for him to get that trait - submitted: 9/11/2002 2:58:56 PM

John Perry was a friend of some people I know, and an officer at the 40th Precinct, where my father's also served the NYPD for 22 years. John was a man among men from what I understand - there will never be another John Perry. John Perry WAS America, and in my mind, he will always be one of my personal heroes from 9/11. May G-d Bless him and his family, May G-d bless America and Israel, and May G-d continue to be at our side as we remember why we fight today. Never forget, Never surrender. Ani Tzioni.

True hero in and outside of the firehouse, great father he was a big family man. His family always came first. He was a great friend to all, he would always drop what he was doing to help someone out. Glenn was a generous man, he loved man kind and made the ultimate sacrifice saving his fellow man. I think Danny was among some from Cantor who used to watch me skate when there was a temporary ice rink in the WTC plaza area in winter of 1996.
I was across the street in one of my former affiliate offices on 9/11. Now employed by the American Bible Society near Lincoln Center.
I have a "butterfly bush" to give Angela & Mark as a living memorial to Danny if they wish.
God Bless...

Try, now, to envision a municipal bond broker, in his 104th-floor office, who dreams the green and bacchanalian dream of being a winemaker. That was Matthew Picerno, 44, of Holmdel, N.J. By day he worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, rising at 5:30 a.m. Six months of the year, when the day job ended, he headed over to Jersey City, to his Bacchus School of Wine franchise, and worked there until 11 p.m. It was a former two-truck garage, well scrubbed, with Italian flags and piped-in Sinatra. The students turned out 200 barrels of wine a year, the school only broke even financially, but what does money matter in an affair of the heart? "This was a hobby," said his wife, Petrina Marie, "but he really enjoyed it. Municipal bond broker at day, winemaker at night. He was pretty wild, very loud. This was a man if you told him this was a rule, he would try to break it just because it was a rule. Anything. Driving. He lost his license at least twice in his lifetime." Mr. Picerno, who leaves three children, aged 9, 12 and 14, had planned to pursue winemaking full time when he left Wall Street. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:07:44 PM

Ask anyone who knew Todd and they will tell you this - he was always smiling. A wonderful son, brother, and friend, Todd will be missed by everyone who ever knew him. At his memorial service, his best friends screened a video montage of photographs and video edits - the most difficult thing about watching that production was hearing Todd's laugh - it was as if Todd was in that room with all of us. I cannot tell you how many times I think I hear that laugh whenever I am in a crowded room. Part of me knows that I am indeed hearing Todd laugh, only I know it is coming from Heaven this time and not from across the room. May you be having a wonderful time up there playing golf and drinking Jack and Cokes!! Keep laughing so that we all know that you are nearby. Dear Friends and Family of Lt. Pontell: My name is Monica Fernandez. On Sept. 11, 2003 I attended a memorial service at my church, St. Mary of the Assumption in Whittier, CA. During part of the evening service everyone in the Church walked up to the altar and spoke the name of the person they selected from a basket of one person who passed during the events of 9-ll. I selected, at random, your loved one's name, Lt. J. G. Darin Howard Pontell. I Pray for him daily - submitted: 9/15/2002 8:01:40 PM

We were never what one would call "close friends", but now as a Firefighter myself, as a result of the events on 9-11 I feel as if I have lost a member of my "family". He is truly a hero in my book and forever will be. Kev, you exemplify the saying that is being seen and heard often "All gave some, Some gave all". As the A train gently rocked her, Carrie Progen would sit with a small pad in her lap and sketch hurried portraits of the commuters sitting and standing around her in silence. These fleeting moments were among life's truest, she told her boyfriend, Erik P. Sharkey, "the moments when New Yorkers were thinking the most." In all, she filled four notebooks with sketches that seemed to reveal the thoughts of strangers. But they also reflected a young artist's passion for her adopted city, Mr. Sharkey said. "The one thing, if you could, is to say how much she loved New York." Ms. Progen, 25, came from Ashburnham, Mass., where she celebrated her high school graduation by getting a Celtic-style tattoo. "The correct terminology for Carrie is free- spirited," recalled her mother, Kathleen. Ms. Progen, who lived with Mr. Sharkey in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, was an administrative assistant at the Aon Corporation . But her passion was her art, including illustrations she had just completed for a children's book about "two parents trying to find their little girl who's hiding from them," he said. An exhibit of her artwork - including her subway sketches - is to be held at 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 in Manhattan at Anderson's Martial Arts Academy, 35 West 31st Street. - submitted: 10/31/2001 9:59:40 PM

World Trade Center - battalion chief, New York Fire Department - submitted: 10/3/2001 8:39:31 AM
. . . . . . .

Richard Prunty's world revolved around two families. There was his family in Sayville, on Long Island, and there was the Second Battalion of the New York City Fire Department. Mr. Prunty, the battalion chief, would explain to his wife, Susan, that his life depended on his firefighters. They depended on him, too. When he received promotions, his firefighters did not want him to move on. "It truly was a brotherhood," she said. Mr. Prunty was heading into 1 World Trade Center with his firefighters, but his wife thinks he probably had tried to call them out because he was so conscious of their safety. At 57, he was a tall, unassuming man, never the type to dominate a conversation or even brag. But when he did have something to say, his soft-spoken words were usually the strongest and most effective that could be said. Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, his family knew he was a teddy bear. He was protective of his two children, Lisa, 25, and Christopher, 21. His daughter recalls her father's visit when she became so ill at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire that she couldn't finish classes during final exams. He stayed for one week, sleeping on the floor. "I almost didn't graduate and that put me through it," she said. - submitted: 10/18/2001 10:33:33 PM

Sir, it was with great pride and sadness that I wear on my wrist a bracelet with your name and rank. The last time I did something like this was during the vietnam war, while I waited for my brother to come home. He did and it is with the deepest of sadness for your family that you did not. But I will never forget and a grateful citizen will always love you and your brothers as one of my own family. Be at Peace. Lynne - submitted: 9/5/2002 5:11:56 PM
